At one o’clock, with a new hairdo and make-up which the hairdresser had done for her (out of pity, Ella suspected), she walked towards the Royal Oak. She liked the town with its pretty market square at one end, the modest town hall, the clothes shops and grocers and hair salons. The lamp posts all sported baskets of flowers blooming in spite of the heat and the lack of rain. She was happy, and looking forward to seeing David.

And there he was, walking towards the pub from the other direction. He hadn’t seen her yet, so she had time to study him in his a well-fitting suit, crisp white shirt, polished shoes. A young woman passed him and turned back for another look, and Ella felt proud that someone else would find him attractive too. He was tall and broad and carried himself well. She rushed the last few yards and smiled as he noticed her.

‘David,’ she said, and wanted to throw herself into his arms. Only the fact that they were in a public place and he had offices in town and may be recognised stopped her.

He seemed equally happy to see her, and less cautious as he took his hat off, swept her into an embrace and kissed her, right there in front of the pub.

‘Are you all right, Ella?’

She nodded, perhaps a little too vehemently. ‘I’m fine.’

‘You look a little peaky.’

‘Not peaky, no.’ She bit her lip, David watched her, a concerned frown creasing his forehead.

‘David, we’re both adults, and we can make our own decisions, so…’ She had no idea how to carry on.

‘Are you breaking up with me?’ he asked.

Ella gasped. ‘No – quite the opposite. I’m propositioning you!’ She blushed.

David laughed and took her hand. ‘Well, I’ll be! Here I am, being the gentleman, and all along all you’ve wanted is my body.’

‘Not all,’ said Ella, ‘I like your mind too. So?’

‘Now?’

‘Yes.’

‘They have rooms here but…’

‘Where then?’

‘My house.’

They left and walked quickly along the high street and then turned off down a narrow lane. Minutes later, David stopped, took out a key, and opened the door of a tall stone house with a narrow front garden. He ushered her in, closed the door firmly behind them and took Ella in his arms.

‘You’re sure about this?’

‘Absolutely. Now kiss me.’ Her heart was pumping hard, and she could feel his, too, as they held each other. They kissed for a long time, and then he led her up to
