Chapter Thirty-Seven

Ecaerin and I made out for something like fifteen minutes. It was incredible. It was stimulating. It was better than I’d even imagined. It was a long, intense good morning.

It was also very difficult.

The blonde ranger’s lips were made for kissing and her body was made for holding onto while doing so. But it was also custom-built for many other things I was forced to not do.

In the end, I had to come up for air and sit back to gain some space.

“That…” I panted, “was amazing. But if we continue, I’m not sure I’ll be able to stop.”

“I agree.” She collapsed to rest her back on the couch. “I would like to do more…”

“We can’t, though. As much as I love this, the reason we’re conducting this experiment is to help save all of you from that magical illness. If we can. I would sacrifice a lot of things to keep going with you, but my conscience won’t let me sacrifice the chance to figure out how to help the entire squad.”

She pawed at me playfully but maintained her distance. “You’re a good man, Jack. A better person than me. Until you just explained it that way, I was planning on trying to convince you to cheat a little bit.”

“It’s just that I haven’t done much else to help yet, as several of the rangers have reminded me.”

“Fuck them,” she spat.

I laughed. “I may end up doing that. If it helps to heal them, then I’m all for it.” I gave her a wide, cheesy grin. She slapped my shoulder.

“Sure, for the good of all. Just remember who was nice to you from the beginning and who already has a lot of ideas how to make you feel really, really good.” She put her hands under her breasts and jiggled them for me.

“I won’t forget. How can I when you invade my dreams constantly?”

She stopped teasing me and stared into my eyes, her face going serious. “Awww, do you really dream of me?”

“Well, fantasies, really, but yeah, of course.”

She closed her eyes and took a breath. “Okay, this trial is finished. If I don’t get out of here now, there may be some kind of accident.”

I pulled her in for one more kiss, let it linger, then released her. “I’ll make it up to you. I promise.”

“Uh-huhn. You better, mister. Don’t forget who trained you to use your sword.”

When I opened up the shelter, five heads snapped toward us. Jhilsara immediately looked away, but her sister, Aelia, and my next two partners kept their eyes glued to me.

“Any, uh, developments with Saphielle?” I asked.

“Just wishing I could have signed up for all five stages,” the purple-haired woman said. That got a laugh from Ayda, but I blamed the chuckle on nervous energy. She was next.

“I’m sorry it didn’t heal you,” I told Saphielle.

“I still have another chance. Maybe.”

I turned to Aelia. “Do you want me to wait a few minutes or go right ahead to the next stage?”

The ranger captain shook her head.
