The potential of the earth is often defined as the ground potential. This can be achieved, for example, by anchoring a pile in the ground, similar to the way lightning conductors are anchored. It may sound strange at first sight to install the earth as an "electrical element" in an electric circuit, but in practice this is quite common; a reliable (down) conductor is required, especially for protective measures. This grounding can be found, for example, in ordinary household sockets. The metal pins located at the top and bottom are used to ground the operated device so that, for example, the housing of a connected device cannot become charged or dangerous. The circuit symbol for grounding is similar to that for ground.
