Miku slipped through the door to Ms. Brown’s former classroom and pulled the shade down over the window. She pressed her back to the door and shut her eyes. What she had in mind was dangerous; if she was caught, she’d be suspended for sure. Maybe even expelled. And how her parents would love that. However, Miku took a deep breath and stifled those thoughts because she’d come too far to stop now. A moment later there was a light knock at the door. Miku cracked it, saw Tessa, and gestured her inside. The two silently waited for the sound of foot traffic outside to quiet as students made their way to their fourth-period classes. A moment later, Raji arrived.

“So what are we—” he said, making the other two jump slightly.

“Shh,” Miku hushed, a finger over her lips. “I’m going to use Ms. Brown’s headset to sneak around the high-security VR.”

Tessa and Raji stared at her, dumbfounded.

“Miku, this is the worst—” Tessa started.

“I’m in!” Raji said before quickly making his way to Ms. Brown’s desk to pull out the heavier, teacher-sized headset.

“You two, stop!” Tessa said in an urgent whisper. “This is no joke. If we’re caught, it’s suspension. For all of us.”

“Tessa, I know,” Miku said, “and if you want to leave, I’ll understand. We’re breaking the rules, and I have to do this, but you don’t.”

Tessa considered a moment and folded her arms. “I’ll stay. Just hurry!”

“What’re you gonna do in there?” Raji whispered excitedly.

“I need evidence,” Miku said, taking the helmet from Raji and looking it over. “And teachers have advanced privileges in VR, so I might be able to learn something. Wish me luck!” And then, without waiting for their response, Miku plunked the helmet onto her head and fired up the VR staging environment.
