Chapter 19

I debated calling ahead for all of the forty-five-minute drive and didn’t. I’d just stop in to see if Doc was okay, tell him to watch himself, then leave him to continue his processing. He’d need protection as well, but getting him to see it would mean getting him to speak to me.

The plants were still dead in their unusual pattern when I arrived, but the place no longer felt like evil had gone and taken a shit on the lawn. Janae’s cleansing had probably given Doc Mike a whole new level of supernatural to deal with. Maybe that was why he’d been avoiding me.

“Hello?” The crash of furniture breaking interrupted my greeting.

I drew my gun and held it pointed at the floor as I jogged for the back, trying to sense in the air flow what might be happening. Dread curdled in my guts as I skidded around the corner and found the doctor’s office.

“Stop!” I shouted at the hoodie-clad figure menacing Doc Mike, pinning him in the corner. “Get away from him!”

The figure turned, and dread hit me full-on when angry blue eyes met mine, like I’d felt on my first visit to the morgue but less.

Blood rimmed his mouth. “Fuck off, lady. You don’t want to be involved in this.”

“You don’t want to hurt my friends.” In my peripheral vision, Doc Mike slid down the wall, hand pressed to his throat. A vampire? They are working with the lich!

The man lunged. His wordless roar showed fangs. I got a shot off before he crashed into me, but it went wide and splintered the already suffering desk. Another went into him point-blank as we hit the floor hard enough to knock the wind out of me. As I gasped and tried to roll over, he ran past me, clutching his gut, and out the door.

I slammed my hand to the floor in frustration and pushed myself up, checking up and down the hall and listening for more trouble before going back to Doc Mike.

“Where are you hurt?” I said.

White-faced, he lifted his hand long enough to show me two neat punctures. “That your copperhead?” he asked, referencing my weak excuse when he’d examined vampire bites last winter.

I flushed with embarrassment. “Yeah. Shit, Doc, it shouldn’t be bleeding like this.”

He grew even paler. “Am I going to⁠—”

“I don’t know. But I can call someone.” I squeezed his arm and stood, peering out the door again before dialing Maria’s number. “Shouldn’t someone else be here with you? It’s the middle of the afternoon.”

“My assistant was in a car accident last night, and we’re still hiring for the other position.”

“Got it.” The phone clicked over. “Hey, Maria. We’ve got an incident at the Raleigh medical examiner’s office.”

“Hello, sugarplum. What’s wrong with your pet doctor?”

“He’s vamp bit, Maria.”

“How problematic. Did you see who?”

“Medium height, medium build. Tanned, but it’s fading, so he’s gotta be a baby. Blue eyes. He’s got a gunshot wound to the gut. We’re gonna need your cleanup crew.
