Chapter 26

After a fitful night’s sleep, I wake early, thirsty and with a dull headache squeezing vice-like at my temples for the second morning this week. Unused to drinking this much, the hangover is fierce and I gulp down the glass of water that tipsy me remembered to leave on the bedside table last night. Necking two paracetamol, I stand under a shower of the coldest water I can bear, pull my clothes on and tiptoe past the other doors until I reach Adam’s room. Knocking lightly but insistently, I whisper through the door.

‘Adam! Adam, it’s me.’ There’s a rustling, then the door is yanked open and I’m faced with a rumpled, tired-looking Adam, hair flat on one side and pillow creases on his cheek.

‘Bloody hell, Claire, what time is it?’

‘Quarter to six. Listen, I was talking to a guy last night in the pub after you left. He said Jack’s still here. He’s on the next beach round, on the pier. I’m going there now — are you coming?’

Stifling a yawn, Adam tugs the door open and gestures to the bed. ‘Sit there. I’m going for a shower. And feel free to make some coffee.’

Ten minutes later, Adam emerges from the bathroom looking — and smelling — much fresher. He grumbles under his breath as I hand him a coffee, only giving me a smile once he’s taken a large sip. I remember now how he really isn’t a morning person. ‘Now I’m actually with it, tell me what this guy said.’

As I update him on what my new friend told me, he raises his eyebrows, his interest piqued. Once he’s downed his coffee, he follows me out to the car, just as eager as I am to get to the beach and finally meet Jack.

The morning air is brisk and cool, the sky blue but with a misty haze hanging over the sea that will hopefully burn off before long. It’s going to be a beautiful day, and the thought pops into my head that Tom and Isla would love it here, before I angrily shake it off. Of course Tom would love it here — he obviously spent time here at some point in his life, and it was important enough for him to keep a photograph stashed away as a souvenir. Adam is silent in the passenger seat, perhaps not quite as awake as I first thought, as I drive slightly too fast through the village, anxious to reach Jack before he heads out in his fishing boat. Passing the lay-by that I pulled into yesterday at Lockwood Bay, I follow the curve of the road round to the next bay and find a small car park. It’s a short walk from there down to the beach, past small pastel-coloured houses packed tightly together, all quirky and slightly uneven. Reaching the bay, I pause for a moment and take it all in, sucking in a deep breath of briny sea air.

‘Are you OK?’ Adam stops alongside me, his hands shoved deep into his jacket pockets.
