We had just climbed down from the rafters when Leo pulled a copy of Il Gazzettino from his ledger and said to me, “Have you seen your latest commendation?” Then his gaze encircled the other men. “Franco is in this week’s Ladies’ Column.”

I froze, worried, and Radillo saw it. “You don’t know the column?” he asked. “It is penned by ‘Lady Margherita Umberto,’ which is an irreverent pseudonym that pays homage to the cult of our Turinese Queen Margherita and King Umberto in Rome. Yet this columnist is no passive angel. She has a knack for unearthing scandals. Her caustic pen spares no one.” He nudged me. “What trouble have you been up to, I wonder, to make an appearance there?”

I had never read that column in the Titian, so now my nerves got the better of me—what would a women’s scandal sheet have to say about me? When might she have even seen me?

I reached for the paper, but Leo swept it back and wagged a finger.

“Read it aloud, Leo,” demanded Radillo. “All of us should hear this.”

“Must we?” Andrea groaned, but Leo cleared his throat:
