Carlo

As the first rays of sunlight crept through the curtains, I stirred from my slumber, feeling a renewed sense of determination. Today was the day I would tell Katerina the truth, unburdening myself of the secrets that weighed heavy on my heart. With a resolute sigh, I pushed the covers aside and rose from the bed, my mind already consumed with thoughts of her.

The kitchen bustled with activity as the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and sizzling pancakes filled the air. I moved with purpose, determined to make Katerina feel at home. I whipped up a batch of fluffy pancakes, flipping them with practiced ease, their golden surfaces filling the room with a tantalizing scent. The sight of the stack piled high on a plate brought a smile to my face, anticipating the joy it would bring to Katerina's morning.

The cook, a long-time member of our staff, noticed my uncharacteristic happiness and remarked, "Carlo, you seem happier today?"

I couldn't help but chuckle at his observation, my excitement palpable. "Just a good day ahead, my friend," I replied, my voice laced with a mix of anticipation and nervousness.

With a tray in hand, laden with a steaming cup of coffee, a glass of freshly squeezed juice, and a plate of warm pancakes, I made my way down the hallway towards Katerina's room. Each step felt charged with a sense of purpose, my heart pounding in my chest as I neared her door.

But as I turned the handle and swung the door open, my heart sank. Katerina's room was empty, her absence a void that echoed through the stillness. Panic gripped me, an icy sensation slithering down my spine. How could she not be here? Where had she gone?

Frantically, I traversed the hallways, my gaze darting from one corner to another, searching for any sign of her presence. The morning sunlight cast long shadows, adding an eerie atmosphere to my desperate quest. I called out her name, the urgency in my voice betraying the fear that clutched at my heart.

And then, like a bolt of lightning tearing through the clouds, I saw them. Katerina, standing in the arms of Roberto on the beach. Time seemed to stand still as I took in the sight before me, my tray slipping from my hands and crashing to the ground, its contents scattering in a chaotic mess.

Anger surged through me like a wildfire, as it dawned on me the real reason that I wanted to tell her the truth. I wasn’t angry with Katerina, but with myself. Enzo had warned me of getting hurt, something which had happened to me once before and I got ahead of myself.

I wanted to tell Katerina the truth so she would think of me as the hero. It had nothing to do with Papa nor my brothers, it was about making her mine.

The time she’d spent with Pietro, I pretended that she was doing it out of politeness. I was the only one that she wanted to be with, but she went with Pietro to keep me happy.
