Free Write

Since young adults are exploring different ways to express themselves, free write is a great option since it allows the group to not only move in a more personal level but can also initiate a great discussion. First, start by introducing a theme. One example can be self-esteem. As the facilitator, you can share information about the theme, why it is relevant (I will bring a relevant article and have copies to share) as well as its significance for young adults who have gone through cancer. Then, I let them know I will be asking a flow of questions and they will just answer as they go. Then, they can share specifics of the process, or just about what they learned or not at all. They are welcome to keep their work or throw it away. The explanation on the current research or relevance is about a 5- to 10-minute summary. Then, the process of answering is about 20 to 30 minutes. Then, a discussion, but note that sometimes they don’t want to discuss, it is important to be very mindful of the energy of where they are at with the end of the activity. Below are examples of a flow of questions (I like to make copies of the questions to give out so that they can take them for journaling later).
