In all Live Science experiences at MSI, a range of theatrical techniques is used throughout the program delivery, in the training of staff, and in how guests are expected to participate or role-play in the program. MSIâs current leadership has emphasized using theatre to communicate science content, and in 2007 âmembers of the guest experience team partnered with the design department and the facilities department to renovate and open a 78-seat, handicap-accessible Science Theatre.â In the show Poop Happens, guests are invited to star in a play about the digestive system. In Taste Buddies, guests enter the world of a vintage Candy Shoppe to learn how taste and smell combined give us a sense of flavor.
Pamela Duncan, CMAâs manager of museum programming, tells us that they find that âby bringing âlifeâ to an exhibit through theatre, we are better able to communicate an idea, evoke an emotional response, and position ideas and objects in time and space.â
So what specifically is it about a character telling a personal story in a dramatic (used here to mean performance, whether comic or tragic) style that makes it so special and leads to a higher rate of retention of information when itâs accompanied by emotion?
⢠First is the basic tenet of showing, not telling. Words become actions and their consequences as experienced by the character(s).
⢠Second, the presentation is story driven, crafted to make us want to hear how it ends for the characters we have come to care about. Jones believes that a good story that illustrates one fact is better than ten facts with no story.
