Chapter 5

Mike put the phone back in the cradle and looked at Jamison, who was sitting across from him. For the past three days, he’d been trying to get in touch with Edwin, to no avail. The phone number he had for the man was disconnected, and there really wasn’t a cell phone in the man’s name, ever. How was it even possible that no one had noticed that before now?

“I take it you’ve not been able to get in touch with him.” Mike told Jamison he’d been trying. “I have as well. Then today the phone number is no longer a working one. How much do you think that idiot Wick told them before he came back here telling us that people knew where he was?”

“Since he knew very little, I don’t think anything that is going to bite us in the ass. Did I tell you that his body was found? Just like we planned. An escaped prisoner caught just outside the prison. Christ, there aren’t even any good criminals around when you need them.” They both laughed a little, but they were pissed because things were not going their way. Mike thought about the first attempt to get Edwin out of their way. “When he figured out about the poison that day, I thought for sure he’d figure out who had ordered it. It was the only reason I had him find a taster for the sheik that was coming in, so he’d be in the kitchen to be blamed for the mess. Who would have ever thought he’d be that ballsy and have all the shit thrown out? Christ, that was a fucking mess.”

“All night, I drank bottled water for fear that the bottles of wine hadn’t been marked. And he’d had it tossed out as well. Even Emma was pissy about having to drink water. She’d wanted to have some very expensive wine too.” Jamison leaned back in his chair before continuing. “We’re going to have to step up our game on this, Mike. The election platform is starting to gear up, and I really like where I am in the grand scheme of things. I know you do as well.”

“I do. Emma told me if she had to move out before she got to have the entire place redecorated, she was going to leave me. Like I need one more bit of pressure put on me right now.” Jamison said his wife was doing the same thing. She wanted to travel more as the lady vice president. “I have to tell you, Jamison, we couldn’t have picked two better people to be our wives. They’re as devious as we are about shit. When my wife had it all figured out about how to make it look like your secretary had killed herself after the debacle in the kitchen that night, I thought I’d better be staying on her good side from now on. No one questioned at all about whether or not she’d actually done it.
