Chapter 3

Cain stands in the middle of a familiar field. The sun shines with an angelic brightness and warmth that makes him want to bask in it forever. The sky is a clear blue, a mirror image of a still tropical ocean. An ocean like the one found on Eden’s beach you might say. He turns his face towards the sky and feels at peace. An unpleasant smell invades his nose and he forces his face away from the sky. The ground beneath the high grass is beaten and bloody. Smoke rises from heaps of tall grass here and there. There are corpses in old army attire that riddle the field as crows feast on the endless smorgasbord. Two different sets of unique uniforms can be identified. Cain can recognize this scene at once and panic grips him like a vice.

This isn’t heaven. This is hell.

He whips around looking for any sign of life or escape only to find himself alone. He falls to his knees and cries. This is his punishment; his damnation.

“Son.”

The voice, soft and nonthreatening, comes from behind him. Cain lifts his head and wipes his eyes. He slowly turns on his knees to see his father standing there with his arms stretched out. The ground under him is once again hard packed desert sand; alien to the rest of the scenery. He is in a uniform identical to one that a corpse not five feet away from Cain is wearing. It looks clean and untouched by the battle that was waged here. His father looks huge compared to him.

Cain jumps up and runs into his father’s waiting arms. His father bends down and embraces him, for Cain is not a man anymore. He is the thirteen year old boy he was when they last met here on this battlefield.

His father pulls him back with his hands still on little Cain’s shoulders and looks him over smiling.

“Glad to have you back soldier.”

“No! I don’t want to be a soldier! I don’t want to hurt people anymore!”

The boy bows his head and begins to sob again. The boy’s father kneels down. Red mud squishes out from under his knees as he levels himself with his son. He looks sternly at the boy.

“You must. There is no one better suited for the job. Son, you’re good at what you do, the best actually despite what you may think. You are your own man again.” His father lifts little Cain’s chin up to him. “What they did to you can be used against them. You’re the only one who can end this.”

Cain stands, no longer a boy, but the man he is. The tears dry on his cheeks. His father rises with him, keeping his hands on his shoulders. His smile never falters. Cain understands and gives his father a nod and a smile in return. This time a solitary tear runs down his father’s face as the wind gently begins to blow. His body begins to blow away with the wind like the very sand he stands on.
