Chapter 23 – Neron

Con just sat there and looked at me, his mouth hanging open. I gave him some time to catch up. I knew it had taken me a long time to wrap my mind around everything, and I had actually been shown the portals.

Unlinking from the other two, Raen beckoned me closer. “My guards will watch the Forgotten. She will not be harmed.” She turned and began swimming away.

I shifted to look at the guards with her. “If there is anything wrong with her when I come back, I will kill both of you. And your leader.” I swam away before they thought to question me.

By the time I caught up to Raen, we were just outside of the dome of Aiseiri. I could have reached out and touched the magical barrier. But instead of going inside one of the sluices, Raen kept swimming.

And swimming.

And swimming.

By the time we stopped, we were over the trench that separated our territory from Myshani, the neighboring kingdom. Raen stilled in the water, her fins moving just enough to keep her in one spot. Her green and blue patterned head still drew me in and repulsed me in equal measure.

“You’ve been here before.” She waved a hand to the trench below.

“Of course. This is where we Send our loved ones and our fallen warriors.”

“What do you know of its depths?”

I shook my head. “I know that they seem to go on forever. I lead a topside team, not the depth investigators. All I know is that once someone goes in, they never come out.”

Raen smiled, her mouth full of blunt teeth. “You are not curious.”

I shook my head. “We have greater threats from above than we do from below.”

Raen’s smile faded. “That is not true. You simply don’t know what to look for.” She waved a hand in an odd circle shape. With her free hand, she started stabbing in the middle of the circle. When she lowered both hands, the trench below us lit up like a torch had been dropped to the bottom of it.

My mouth opened, right before I snapped it shut and gritted my teeth. “How did you do that?” I had my hand on my weapon, ready for any other tricks she might try to pull.

She tipped her head to the side. “It is no trick, Rear Admiral. Merely an opening.”

“An opening to what?”

“To the other worlds.”

I shook my head. “No. There’s no such thing. Just the vast expanse of this planet.”

She chuckled, it sounded like a rush of bubbles through a small tube. “Then how do you explain me?”

Scat. She was right. I had zero explanation for her or her guards.

She smiled again. “There are other worlds, Rear Admiral. Hundreds of them. Perhaps even thousands.”

“I need to tell our king right away. I need to warn the other kingdoms.”

She shook her head. “No. I should not have shown you. It is in direct violation of the Accords to give evidence to worlds that have not yet discovered it on their own.
