Wolf watched as Patterson twisted in place in the dirt of the lower parking lot, scanning the forest in all directions. She was holding the cell records in her hands, her eyes bouncing between the papers and her surroundings.

Near the entrance to the Silver Vein Wilderness area, a pair of barricades had been set up, closing the road. A deputy named Granby had been stationed there to turn away any hikers coming up to use the two parking lots.

From where their group stood, the upper lot was invisible behind the folds of the forest, but a loud whirring sound echoed through the valley, proving the forensic team was still hard at work extracting the two vehicles from the mine shaft.

“She’s getting into this,” Rachette said under his breath.

“It’s been a while since she’s been on a case,” Yates said.

“She’s not on the case. She’s on a ride-along.”

Patterson turned around and walked back toward them. “Let’s go up.”

They got back in their SUVs and drove to the upper lot, where a tow truck was parked near two forensic department vehicles. Brock’s BMW X5 was perched atop the back of the tow truck, dented and just as dirty as the day prior.

“They’re making progress,” Patterson said.

Wolf continued through the lot and into the woods, following what now looked like a well-worn road due to all the tires that had traveled down the gradual slope to the hole. He parked his SUV among the mass of official vehicles and got out.

A large group of uniforms were gathered near the hole, keeping their distance from a heavy-duty tow truck and the taut cable it had lowered into the shaft. The air smelled like diesel fuel and burning rubber as the driver revved the tow truck’s engine, inching the vehicle forward. The winch mounted on its back whirred and screeched like a dying yeti, straining to bring Clara’s vehicle to the surface.

Deputy Nelson walked up, nodding in greeting. “I’d stay back. That cable could snap at any second. They got the BMW out.”

“We saw,” Wolf said.

“They had to remove some rock from the walls with jackhammers while preventing a cave-in and keeping the debris from damaging the cars further. It was a whole ordeal all night.”

Wolf didn’t envy them. But then again, he was the one who had almost been eaten by two mountain lions.

They observed for a few minutes as men yelled and scrambled, and the truck and winch pulled. Finally, the tail of Clara Abraham’s mangled Mazda lifted into view, lurching out of the hole.

The driver of the tow truck shut off the engine, and the group of uniforms cheered.

Wolf turned to Patterson and saw she had been ignoring the spectacle, instead wandering the woods behind them.

“What’s up?” Wolf asked.

She rejoined the detectives. “It does seem highly unlikely one person did all this.”

“Agreed,” Rachette said.

She nodded, eyeing the action near the hole. The Mazda was being dragged onto the ramp of the tow truck. “Let’s take off,” she said. “There’s nothing we can do here but get in the way.
