Chapter 40

Scott could still smell the rubbing alcohol inside Shauna’s house.

Twenty-nine years ago, when he was thirty-nine, during a one-night layover in Orange County, California, Scott had flown into John Wayne Airport and on a whim, took a cab north about seven miles to one of his favorite restaurants: Black Angus Steakhouse.

Tired and hungry for a juicy steak, he wanted a high-calorie dinner, a few drinks, and to head back to his hotel for a few hours of shut eye before an early flight. He knew consuming alcohol within twelve hours of taking control of a passenger aircraft was a violation of FAA rules, but he had broken that stupid rule more times than he could count.

He sauntered into the restaurant at half-past six, but there was an hour-long wait for a table. He made his way into the bar area, stopped to find a seat, and spied a gorgeous, lonely creature hunched over a strawberry margarita, twirling the thin red straw. She wore a black shift dress, with lightweight woven fabric and a V-neck as deep as an ocean abyss. The matching leather boots traveled up to the tops of her knees. Her body language signaled sad, desperate for attention.

Easy prey, he thought, jamming his wedding ring deep into his pocket before cozying up next to her.

“You look like you could use some company,” he said, smooth as ever.

Without looking up she replied, “Is it really that bad?” and continued her distant gaze into the cocktail.

He took a seat and ordered the same drink, which helped break the ice. Eventually he introduced himself and managed to eke out a half smile from that perfect little piece of lady meat.

“For what it’s worth, I’ve been told I’m a great listener. If you happen to have anything you’d like to talk about, I’m here for you.” His bright white toothy grin grabbed her attention. An effective manipulation tool that typically worked wonders on most women in her position.

At first, she hesitated to talk, but he continued to work his magic and once she opened up, she spilled her guts about the recent break up with her long-time boyfriend, how he had cheated on her even though they were talking about getting married and having kids, and how she’d always been attracted to the wrong kind of men.

Putty in Scott’s hands.

After a few more drinks, they shared some snacks and she asked him if he was married. He lied, saying he hadn’t found the right woman yet. She told him she had a thing for pilots, and he reeled her in.

Under the guise of a night cap, they eventually stumbled back to his hotel room, but once inside they consumed each other with lust. He realized he had forgotten to bring a condom, and although he told himself to be careful, in the heat of the moment he failed to pull out. Damned primitive animal instincts. She kept telling him to give her everything he had.

So he did.

He rested for a few hours, showered and dressed while she slept.
