Discovering Canada’s Card Money

Perhaps Canada’s card money of 1685–1686 had become known in Massachusetts by 1689, as detailed above. If not, there were new routes in 1690. Acadian prisoners of war were brought to Boston and were disposed to local families, to work for their livelihood until shipped to French dominions. One “Lavalier”—perhaps the former Acadian governor who had spent a winter with de Meulles—was delivered to Deputy Joseph Lynde.78 Governor Meneval was released to Nelson’s house. Other French soldiers were captured or deserted in the land frontier and disclosed considerable information.79

Some historians have argued that the expedition to Quebec could have directly and physically exposed Massachusetts soldiers to Canadian money.80 The armada captured French ships on its way to Quebec and back. The Puritans raided houses below Quebec and fought French soldiers there. Prisoners were taken and interrogated. The retreat involved a general prisoner exchange, returning to Massachusetts about twenty people captured in the land frontier. They had spent months in Quebec in relative freedom and were well informed of the situation in the town, which was then using its third generation of card money.81
