Investing in Yourself

Many people come into some sort of windfall each year. A relative might leave you an inheritance, you might win a lottery, or you might receive a large bonus at work. There are dozens of ways to come into unexpected cash flow. What’s important, however, isn’t how much the windfall is, but what you do with it.

The first instinct for many people—especially people who don’t often have a lot of money—is to spend it all on extravagant vacations and purchases. This is natural; we feel deprived of material goods that we see our friends and family having, so we aspire to be like them. We want that large flat screen TV and a cabin up north.

But what people might not think about is the importance of investing in themselves. Investing in yourself is the best way to work toward not only positive cash flow but also positive energy flow.

Picture yourself on an airplane. The flight attendant is going over the safety procedures and walking you through where the exits are. She gestures at the little control panel above your head and mimes an oxygen mask coming down in the case of the cabin losing air pressure. What does she say to do? Are you to help others with their masks first, and then put your own on? Should you adjust your child’s mask before fitting your own?

No. Every time the flight attendant runs through that safety instruction, she tells you to put your own mask on before assisting others. Why do you think she tells you that? Because you can’t help other people if you don’t first help yourself.

This is a huge stumbling block for the majority of clients I meet with. People love to help each other. It may seem like that isn’t always true—humans seem to be constantly fighting, but when it comes down to it, we like to help one another. Helping others makes us feel good.

What we so often forget, however, is that we can’t give someone a sip of water if our own cup is empty.

When I first met Joel, he would jump from topic to topic with rapid-fire energy and passion. It was intoxicating and inspiring, but obviously exhausting. He was the first to offer to refill your drink, or to order you a snack if you were hungry. He would offer you the shirt off his back if you were just a little chilly. Joel didn’t have much, but he gave everything he had and more. He ran himself into the ground, and by the time I met him, he was struggling to focus and keep his energy in one place.

Joel wanted help with making his business stronger and more profitable. After talking to him for a while, we decided that our energies might be better placed if we helped him to focus on himself. His business wasn’t the most profitable, but he wasn’t headed toward bankruptcy either; it could wait. What couldn’t wait was his health.

Joel’s insistence on caring for everyone but himself had run his health into the ground.
