Every working mother I met suffered some guilt pangs over their long hours away from their family. But the extent of their guilt antidotes amazed me. Their coping mechanisms went far beyond the popular practice of sharing dinner with their youngsters, then working from home after putting them to bed, or dragging offspring to their office on weekends.

Take Carol Bartz, a former leader of Autodesk and Yahoo. When the youngest of her three children entered kindergarten, Bartz reviewed the school calendar with her daughter and pledged to attend certain key events, such as holiday parties. “Did she totally understand that at five?” Bartz asked. “No. But I did that every year.” The executive also placed her commitments to school events on her work calendar, and sternly warned her assistant, “I don’t care if the pope comes to audit us. I am going to the Christmas Sing.”

Liz Smith, the Bloomin’ Brands chief executive, devised a time bank account because she wanted to spend four hours every day with her two young sons. If she missed her goal due to work demands, she replenished the time owed the next week. “Some days, I would cancel my meetings that morning because I was in the hole to them,” Smith recalled. “I would spend the morning at home.”
