Colin awoke later to Jeff gently shaking him awake. Bleary eyed he looked at Jeff confused for a moment, wondering where he was, then he remembered. He blinked as he saw that he was lying on the floor of his lab, head and back sore from impact and the stool lying on its side next to him. He held up his left arm and examined the flesh that he saw there.

It wasn’t perfect – the muscles were slightly off and the flesh wasn’t perfectly aligned to his old flesh but it was there. He had succeeded. He let his head lay back against the floor.

‘I did it,’ he said to Jeff, who just nodded in return, ‘That means my idea is possible.’

Jeff again nodded.

It was Mrs Whiskers who asked the obvious question, ‘What the hell were you doing? And why does your arm look like some kind of grotesque butcher’s experiment?’

The cat certainly had a way with words.

‘I was… trying something new. An idea I wanted to try out.’

Mrs Whisker’s eyes darted around the room as if she could work out what his idea was by studying its contents. They swung past the remains of the dead cat, now devoid of most of its flesh before swinging back and widening in alarm.

‘What happened to the cat?’ she asked with severe distaste.

‘The dead cat is now mostly here,’ said Colin, holding up his arm and deliberately answering her as obliquely as possible. She wasn’t the only one who could play games.

‘I see.’ Said the Undead cat, dead black eyes boring into him.

‘I wanted to see how much use I could get out of a dead cat,’ he gave her a pointed look, ‘Turns out it is quite a lot. Right?’

Mrs Whiskers chose that moment to simply turn tail and leave the lab as fast as possible, Colin chuckling as she fled.

Pulling himself up to a sitting position, he studied his left forearm again, seeing the small but obvious deformities that his sorcery had created. It was going to be painful, but with a sharp knife and some more clever sorcerous manipulation, he was going to fix his arm.

He looked at Jeff and held out his right hand, ‘Hand me a knife, would you?’
