10 October 1988. Fort Wayne, Indiana. 1pm
Jacques Rougeau stood in his wrestling trunks with his back against the corridor wall. Raymond stood opposite him. They tried to look casual. Jacques gripped the roll of quarters tightly in his right hand to relieve his tension. They knew the Bulldogs were in the canteen at the end of the corridor and would have to walk towards them to access the arena or the interview positions where they would be recording after lunch. They also knew the Bulldogs were not alone, they were eating with Muraco and Bad News â a fearsome crew â but Raymond was prepared to take a beating to give his brother his shot at Tom.
Muraco and Bad News emerged from the canteen and went their separate ways..
Booking agent Pat Patterson told Davey that the Bulldogsâ travel tickets for their upcoming European tour were ready for collection from the office, so Davey headed in that direction, arranging to meet Tom at their filming spot shortly, and Pat made his way down the corridor towards Raymond and Jacques.
In the canteen, Tom finished his cigarette, picked up his and Daveyâs plastic coffee cups and walked out alone. In his Union Jack emblazoned trunks, he turned into the corridor and walked directly towards the Rougeaus. For the first time in his life, by chance or by design or by a little of both, without his friends and most importantly, without his cousin and partner, Tom Billington was vulnerable.
Jacques refused to make eye contact, instead he feigned being intimidated. Tom puffed out his chest and smiled at Jacques, who finally looked up and stared back at him, before unleashing a whole week of tension, anger and shame through his right hand into the exposed mouth of the Dynamite Kid.
The tranquil hallway instantly exploded into carnage upon the sickening sound of shattering teeth. Pat Patterson began shrieking hysterically; quarters and hot coffee rained down to the floor, shortly followed by a deluge of thick blood, which also spattered on to Jacquesâ face and torso as Tomâs knees buckled â but he did not go down.
Jacques froze, praying the job was done, but Tom stumbled towards him, with his hands on his knees, and like an unstoppable horror-movie villain, looked up. His teeth were shattered; dark blood spewed out of his mouth, he snarled and grimaced as he tried to regain his balance and go on the offensive.
âJab! Jab!â Raymond screamed over Pat Pattersonâs cries for help. Jacques did as his older brother and team captain instructed and began to thrust his left fist into Tomâs face. Still, the Dynamite Kid would not fall.
With the noise and commotion echoing through the building, Bad News Brown and Don Muraco soon arrived on the scene and pulled Tom away. They dragged him into the locker room to give him medical attention, but Tom was still on his feet, spitting blood-laden profanities and threats at Jacques, and still wanting to fight. Jacquesâ adrenaline burst out as he yelled
