CHAPTER 19
Jentzen had chosen the battleground carefully. Her place. She had the home field advantage.
Trace hadnât asked why. Heâd heard all he needed to know in her voice when she made the call.
We have to talk. My place. Thirty minutes.
Ramon Johnson still remembered nothing about the shooting. His mother had gotten a little testy with Trace for continuing to press her son, who had been moved to the psychiatric ward for further observation.
Trace had a feeling that Ramon Johnson would never remember what happened to him. The Bureau would need to send in a specialist to determine if brainwashing was at play, but he had a hunch that was the case. He hadnât known the Gamekeeper to use that tactic the last go-round, but then again, none of the victims had survived.
As much as he knew about the bastard, he didnât know nearly enough.
Trace parked his sedan in front of Jentzenâs small home and blew out a breath of utter fatigue. He told himself he could do this, had to do it. There was no one else. He needed Jentzen on his side. For the first time, he recognized the bottom lineâhe could not do this alone.
But damn if he didnât dread seeing new accusations in her eyes. Her chief, or maybe Douglas, had probably given her some new scrap of evidence to indicate that Trace was off his rocker, unstableânot fieldworthy. And maybe he was. He could scarcely get past looking at himself in the mirror each morning. He closed his eyes at night, wanting nothing more than to drink himself into oblivion. And every damned night he made himself a promise, if it was this bad the next day heâd give in and drink until he could forget.
Thatâs how he survived. One day at a time. About the only thing that kept him from saying to hell with it all was the idea that if he didnât stop the Gamekeeper, no one would. It wasnât that he thought he was so damned good that no one else could do thisâ¦he simply knew that it had to be him. For one thing, no one wanted to accept that it was, in fact, the Gamekeeper up to his old tricks. Not to mention that the Gamekeeper had sealed that decision by drawing Trace here. And as much as Atlanta PD, Elaine Jentzen being no exception, didnât want him here, he had to be here. He had no choice in the matter.
Funny damned thing was, Douglas had insisted that he explore his theory, just to be safe. Why the hell didnât the guy give him any support now? Trace had suspected that he was playing both sides of the fence here.
Callahan was fairly certain of the reason Douglas so carefully covered his ass. Fear. Fear that Trace would go off the deep end again and kill someone or get someone killed. No one wanted to take the blame for allowing him this much rope. And yet, no one whoâd been involved with the Gamekeeperâs previous case wanted to take the risk that Trace might be right.
