Chapter Sixteen

When Bronson finished making the call to Agnes, he slipped his phone into his pocket and wiped the thin layer of beading sweat from his forehead. “This won’t work.”

Standing beside him in the empty hallway, Charlie wrinkled his nose. “I’m very sure no one ever got something done by deciding it was pointless before they even started.”

The shifter snorted. “That’s a weird thing to hear coming from a guy like you.”

“I don’t know how that was supposed to be a compliment, but thanks.”

Somewhere down another branching corridor in the maze of Azure’s compound, hurried footsteps echoed and faded again in the opposite direction. Bronson puffed his cheeks and blew out a long, slow breath. “You know, you kinda seem like the only shifter here who doesn’t want to strangle me.”

The biker dwarf grimaced and shook his head as he stepped away from him. “Trust me, I do.”

“Oh.”

“Seriously, you gotta know you won’t get away with…you know, killing transfor—”

“I know that.” Bronson growled. “And I know it doesn’t mean anything to anyone here, but I never —”

“What?” The dwarf raised an eyebrow. “Regretted it? Knew what you were doing? Thought about how shitty it is to go after innocent magicals who can’t protect themselves because they had no one to show them how?”

“Yeah, never mind.”

“Nice try. No one’s brushing this under the rug, Bronson. Just so you know.” Charlie hiked the waistline of his pants up and sniffed. “It’s a good thing we arrived when we did, though. You’d probably be dead without us.”

“I’m probably dead anyway.”

“Aw, come on.” Charlie rolled his eyes and hissed a sigh. “You screwed up. Big time. Do you know how lucky you are that I got Johnny to take this case in the first place?”

The young shifter’s eyes widened. “You?”

“Yeah. It didn’t cost me a dime either until we started making bets today on— You know what?” Charlie pointed at him. “That doesn’t matter. What I’m telling you right now is you owe Johnny and Lisa a hell of a lot for putting up with your dumb ass and hauling you out of the hole you dug yourself like…like…” He laughed. “Damn. I think I get it now.”

“Get what?”

“Family stuff. Don’t worry about it.” When Rex and Luther appeared around the corner at the end of the hall, followed closely by Johnny and Lisa, he slung his arm around Bronson’s shoulders again and held him a little tighter than necessary. “The point is, man, you have a ton of work to do. Serious work. And you’re gonna hate every second of it.”

“Please remove your arm,” the shifter said flatly through gritted teeth.

“Manners. That’s a good start.” He thumped him on the back instead. “Now, how about an apology?”

“What?”

“Come on, Harford. You know what you did.”

Bronson glanced at the ceiling and muttered, “I’m…sorry I kidnapped you.”

“And?”

“What else do you want me to say?” The young man stepped away from the dwarf and forced himself to lower his voice as he darted a glance at the two partners approaching with the hounds.
