Chapter Sixteen

It was harder than they imagined it would be to find one of the engineering lab’s employees who was willing to talk to them—or who had seen anything remotely helpful.

The most responsive group of employees stood away from the medical personnel vehicles, huddled together, and held a meeting in low conversation while they glanced occasionally at their destroyed workplace.

“Hey, folks.” Johnny stopped in front of them, jerked his chin up, and folded his arms. “Did y’all see anythin’ go down here before it all blew up?”

“Who are you?” A woman adjusted her glasses and scrutinized him suspiciously.

“Agent Breyer and Johnny Walker,” Lisa said quickly. “Director Zimmerman sent us here to find out what happened.”

“We don’t know anything about what happened. And I can’t understand why no one will let us go home. We’ve been out here for five hours already.”

“It might be ’cause they wanted y’all to stick around until Agent Breyer and I are done here.” Johnny tugged his beard. “Did anyone get hurt in these explosions?”

“A couple but so far, only Paxton was killed.” A man with dirt and blood smeared across the front of his white lab coat pointed at a black body bag on the ground beside the emergency vehicles. “He lost his cane after the first blast and couldn’t make it out.”

“I’m sorry,” Lisa said.

“We weren’t supposed to operate in a high-risk facility. Not this high-risk.”

Johnny wrinkled his nose at the body bag. “Well, that changed today, folks. I’m sorry to be the one to tell you that but y’all already know, I guess. So what happened?”

“Our lab blew up!” The woman shouted so forcefully that her glasses slipped down the bridge of her nose and she fumbled to right them again. “What else do you need to know?”

“Anything you can remember would help us considerably,” Lisa said gently. “I know it’s been an awful day. But the more we know now, the better chance we’ll have of finding the person responsible for this.”

The woman turned away and muttered angrily and almost inaudibly.

Two other technicians moved closer to the partners. “The first explosions came from the back of the building. It’s a storage area, mostly, and one of the old locker rooms no one uses anymore.”

“All right. That’s a good start.” Johnny nodded. “Do you remember how many?”

“Two.”

“N-no,” the bloodied man interjected. “I think it was three. Two before the guards went to investigate. Then another one and we were all told to get out so we did.”

The short, stocky man beside him shook his head. “We should have tried harder to make sure everyone was out.”

“That wasn’t your job and y’all can’t go blamin’ yourself for what happened to Paxton, understand?” Johnny glanced at each of them in turn. “Y’all might not have made it out otherwise.”

“Jennifer wanted to go back for him,” the guy in the lab coat said and lowered his voice as he gestured to the agitated woman with the glasses who’d stepped away. “She almost made it inside but then the front of the building blew up.
