THE LIBRARY WAS ALWAYS A VAST SOURCE of knowledge, but for the first time in her life, Talise wasn’t sure what to look for. The polished wood shelves towered high above her. Rolling ladders were attached to the end of each long row so the highest shelves would be reachable.

She loved the musty smell of the old books. Sometimes she would lean in close just to breathe in the smell. And the spines were always so lovely. Leather and cloth with such designs on the cover, as beautiful and intricate as pieces of art.

She traced a finger over a friendly green spine. The title had seemed silly at first, but she kept coming back to it. Glancing over her shoulder, she checked to see if Aaden was nearby. He wasn’t.

They were supposed to be looking for books that would help them be better teachers. She had already spent the last two days poring over books on teaching theory. The strategies were helpful, but they tended to focus on concrete concepts like management and curriculum design.

What she needed was much more abstract. Loyalty, respect. Not for the first time that day, her thoughts drifted back to Marmie. Even in her earliest memories, Talise recognized how Marmie could gain the respect of anyone around her.

Marmie had been firm when she needed to be, but she had never treated Talise the way the emperor did. What was it about Marmie that made her so endearing to everyone she met?

Talise traced her finger over the title again. Eternal Friendships. A part of her still felt silly about it. What did friendship have to do with leadership? But another part of her felt like it might be the answer she needed.

When she attempted to abandon the competition back at the academy, Wendy had packed food for her. She implored her to stay, but she never forced her to.

It wasn’t a title or intimidation that made Wendy react the way she did. In that case, friendship was all she needed.

Glancing over her shoulder for a second time, Talise pulled the book off the shelf. Enough of the going back and forth. She needed answers, and she needed them now. Fire Festival was only two weeks away. She didn’t have time to waste.

The first few pages held words that should have seemed obvious.

More than anything, a friendship blossoms when both parties are genuinely invested in the other’s lives. If an eternal friendship is what you desire, begin by asking about the person’s life. But that is only the first step. Next, it is imperative that both parties then support each other and help each other succeed in their desired goals.

She wanted to roll her eyes at the words. She wanted to scoff and laugh and write the book off as useless. Except she couldn’t. As obvious as the words were, she couldn’t help but realize she had never once made any attempt to get to know her soldiers.

Their hopes and desires were mysteries to her. She knew nothing of their families, their homes.
