Chapter

Twelve

The next couple of days passed faster than I’d expected.

On the first morning after our dungeon dive, Stormbreaker was surprisingly easy on us during class. She was firmer in her words than her actions.

This time, she wasn’t drunk or hungover, so everyone absorbed as much as possible about how to use reach to your advantage in a one-on-one fight. Despite the productive training session, my exhaustion lingered, and I couldn’t stop wishing I could crawl back into bed.

I sensed the same weariness in my companions as we took turns sparring with swords and spears. By the end of the class, though, we felt more energized, even managing to put into practice some movements I’d learned from fighting the crystal guardian.

The following day, Mahud spoke to us about the fourth floor in an almost secretive manner. He withheld many details, revealing only that the dungeon consisted of a mysterious boss fight. He omitted the fact that the system practically guaranteed a level-up during the dive and arena segment.

I couldn’t help grinning as the instructor gave us lessons on how to fight specific types of bosses, focusing on humanoid enemies, flying creatures, inanimate guardians, and elementals. These, he explained, were the kinds of bosses we’d theoretically encounter most often.

There was no mention of meat abominations in the lesson, and I could only hope my fellow adventurers wouldn’t face one anytime soon.

Mahud seemed almost melancholic as he talked about dungeons, as if their glory days were long gone rather than just a few days behind us. I wanted to reassure him and tell him we’d revive dungeon diving and that we were on the trail of how the Nether Infection had spread to the second floor. But the truth was, we couldn’t promise him anything.

For all we knew, Marjorie could’ve been lying the entire time. There was only one way to find out what was truly happening. We needed access to Mahogany’s information. Only then could we cross-reference different sources and piece together a clear picture of the problem.

Knowing this as well as I did, Sophia and Mel spent the next few days observing Mahogany’s habits and monitoring shifts in the portal room. Every detail was meticulously noted in a small notebook that Sophia carried everywhere.

Their bond grew as they spent more and more time talking and planning. Meanwhile, I used the opportunity to train outside the guild with Nilea and Lina. It seemed like a good way to distract any observers from Sophia and Mel while also keeping me in shape.

“You’re getting better at the thrust,” I said between breaths, deflecting another of Lina’s strikes.

She stepped back as soon as I said it, annoyance flashing across her face. “I didn’t hit you once! You don’t need to patronize me.”

“I’m not! I can’t throw fireballs, and you’re still learning the sword—just like I am.”

“But you’re very skilled with it, Master John,” the raven cawed from a nearby branch.

I wasn’t sure if the bird was trying to flatter me or simply stating what it thought was obvious.
