Chapter Twelve

John woke. Shayla hovered close to his bed; clothes draped over her arms. She laid them over a chair and pulled him up.

“I only found out you were accompanying Kyla last night. I didn’t have time to make much, but it should help. We need to try them on and make sure they fit. I can do a few alterations while you have breakfast, but nothing huge.”

“Morning, Shayla,” he said.

He was naked, but that didn’t bother him like it used to. Shayla had dressed him before. There was nothing new to see, or so he thought. She reached for his chest, cupping his pecs. “You’re much stronger, leaner. I hope they fit.”

Her touch swelled his cock, something he found a little unbelievable. Ellie and Venx had ruined him the previous night, but he had the feeling that the dungeon rejuvenated him, not just as he slept, every moment of the day. He should ache. His ass muscles should be a sore as hell, and some of the positions he’d held should have cramped his calf muscles. Mia had kept him up most of what little of the night remained, and after he’d hardly slept, but he felt as fresh as a daisy.

“If they don’t, I have a little trick I can play,” he said. “You’ve been up all night too?”

“Yes.”

“Want an immaculatus?”

She exhaled. “That would be amazing. I’m fucked. Well, I’m not. I wish I was but…”

He pressed his finger against her lips. “One day,” he said.

“My loyalty’s not moving.”

“It will. I think I’ve worked it out. It’s as much about your feelings toward the dungeon as me. The clue is in the name Dungeon Core Guardians. You have to be level six loyalty, but note how you’re not my guardian, but the dungeon’s core. So I think it’s as much about you being willing to defend the core and the dungeon as much as me.”

“But I’m no fighter. I’ve had one battle, and that was me running from the Six Sisters. How is my loyalty ever going to rise?”

“How do you gain experience?”

“Through performing my skills and using my talents, but I never rose higher than four because we didn’t have the cloth. I went down to three, but regained my level once I started working for you.”

“Working with,” John pointed out.

“Dress it up how you want. I work for you, John.”

“Perhaps that’s it. Try thinking like this. You work for everyone’s safety. Only by making the dungeon powerful can we survive. It’s a collective thing, not all about me.”

“But you’re a big part of it.”

He looked up her sheet.
