John stared up at the cabin’s ceiling. He wondered where Mia was, whether she’d dropped anchor and swum to the shore. If so, how she was doing on her journey to Vernaster. Their conversation had nearly emptied his mana store. Fortunately, it recovered by six-hundred and forty an hour, and in the twelve-plus hours since their chat, it had replenished. But he didn’t want to disturb her. There was little point until she met up with Purity.

He pondered Purity too. He’d wanted to visit her again. But his spell had grown in power. It had morphed into something new. If he contacted her, there was the real danger he’d reveal himself. He looked up the spell, studying its evolution.

Phantom Reflection (Instant) Evolved: Allows the caster to assign a target and then spy on that target. Caster can also interact with target that has a similar spell or is open to communication. Mana drain dependent on distance. Both sides must agree to the communication. Both sides must have a connection. Stealth mode is optional.

It was good to know he could hold a medieval, magical Teams meeting with Mia whenever he needed. It had been nice talking to someone from Earth—talking to someone who would really get him. There was a different type of familiarity to what he shared with Ellie and Venx. In some ways it was unwelcome. He’d been better off not thinking about his past life. Dwelling on something that was over and done with was counterproductive. There was no way he could dwell in the past. The present was intense enough, and the future looked like it was going to get busier and busier.

Kyla nuzzled into him, their bed a blanket and coats on the unforgiving stone floor. She’d risen dramatically in his estimation, and it wasn’t just her words, her dedication to his cause. She was plain nice, but she didn’t take shit. The little showdown with Jax had shown him that. If there hadn’t been the structure in place, he’d have taken her as a Guardian already.

He pulled her close, feeding off her warmth and vice versa.

As he lay there, he wondered at Ellara’s intervention. Had Fellora tried to kill him because her sister had overstepped? Had that given her the opportunity she’d needed? Either way, it had taught John a valuable lesson. He had to tread with caution outside the dungeon boundaries. However, it did appear that both goddesses could manipulate but not directly affect the actors. Fellora, for instance, could cause the weather to change which just happened to freeze him to death, but he bet she couldn’t drop a bolt of lightning on his head. That would be too direct.

Of all the things, though, it had been his faith that had stunned him the most. He truly did believe in the beautiful, sultry goddess who’d offered him a new life. He wanted to win for her. For the first time in his life, he believed in a cause, and it filled him with warmth.
