Chapter 16

We didn't find any spider bats, but we did find several places where something that small could get in, which we had hastily sealed. I felt better for having caught some of them, but the existence of a few implied there would be more cracks or windows they could use to crawl through.

I did a quick search from my phone while we were waiting for the first guests to arrive, which would happen any moment now. Unfortunately, it confirmed what I had heard - there was very little preventing Steve from messing with me, my people, or my dungeon.

The problem was jurisdiction. The sheer array of nations we were relatively close to meant it was very hard to say whose laws applied here. The entire aetherdeep had been classified as an ocean. Initially, dungeons had been allowed to fly flags of particular nations like boats did – and in doing so, place themselves under that country's legal jurisdiction – but that had ended after a scramble for strategic dungeon rights between the USA and USSR had nearly triggered World War Three.

This had lead to a treaty in the 80’s, the Comprehensive Aetherdeep Territories Agreement, often just called the CAT Agreement.

The result of the CAT Agreement was that the entire area was a complicated legal gray zone, but broadly speaking, dungeon lords ran things. I could apply laws within this area as I saw fit, but I had no authority to enforce that against other dungeon lords.

The flip side of that was there were still private interests. If I could prove Steve was submitting false reviews of my dungeon, the site would remove them. But by sending in monsters that looked like pests, he could legally tank my rating.

On the other hand, it was unlikely that this would actually result in bloodshed or direct violence. The moment that happened, other dungeon Lords would start getting concerned and properly involving themselves. That usually prevented these conflicts from being more than sending monsters at each other to harass operations but not hurt anyone.

I needed to find time to go see Angelica. Having been seen walking in and out of her dungeon would afford me a level of protection because no one in the area would want to risk pissing her off.

"Well, hi there," Shelly said, her words snapping me back to the present and getting me to put my phone down. "Wanna welcome y'all to the Deep Cloud Hearth. Would you happen to have a reservation with us today?"

"Yes," said the apparent leader of the group. He stepped forward with an air of confidence, an older gentleman looking like he might be in his 40s or 50s with a salt and pepper beard under a bald head. He moved with a confidence that marked him as someone who had been in a few combats in his day.
