What if you always heard that you’d be unsuccessful and reaching your goals was virtually impossible? Imagine how that would make you feel. Would that motivate you to keep going, or would it cause you to settle for less and just let life happen without putting in much effort to achieve greatness?

At some point in your life, you’ll most likely hear a few of these statements:

→ The job market is tough.

→ It’s hard out there.

→ Most people fail doing that.

→ You’ve got a good thing going; you shouldn’t risk it by doing something else.

Are you confident enough in who you are and what you want to become, personally and professionally, to block out the negativity and naysayers? People will always have something to say about what’s going on in the job market or life in general. And if you experience obstacles and hear enough dissent, your self-talk may become defeatist and keep you from accomplishing the things you wish you could.

It’s easy to question why things aren’t working out for you and why career and life goals are so hard to reach. And if you feel this way, you aren’t alone; this is the norm. That’s why society marvels at those who have overcome obstacles and achieved greatness because they are seen as extraordinary anomalies.

Most of us have lavish dreams of having a better life and being the best version of ourselves. That’s why every year, millions of people set out to make resolutions about changes they want to make or goals they want to accomplish, holding the belief that this year will be the year. Interestingly, a study conducted by the Journal of Clinical Psychology at the University of Scranton found that only 8% of people accomplish their New Year resolutions. This means that 92% of people fail. That’s because often, people say they want to achieve something, yet the details are vague and ambiguous. On top of that, distractions get in the way, and once enough time has passed, it’s hard to get back on track.

I often experienced setbacks with certain goals I set (or thought I had set). While I was an overachiever in some areas of my life, I was a huge procrastinator in others. I let the outside world dictate how I approached things, particularly when it came to my career. I also suffered from some serious imposter syndrome which caused me to leave many projects on the back burner. It wasn’t until I decided to be proactive instead of reactive that I began to attain what I desired. Wanting to get away from the pressure of getting my stuff together and mapping out my life, I told myself there was no need to stress about things if I did them in a well-organized fashion that took away any burdensome feelings. Relaxing while goal setting was the one thing that shifted this for me, so I called it Goal S.P.A. (Set, Plan, Actualize):

→ Set real goals and prepare your mindset for achievement instead of just hoping, dreaming, and wishing for them to happen miraculously.
