She left the outfield. It was evident that Jennifer was not going to be of any help. Liz watched as Micky presided over batting practice, stepping in to correct a batter’s stance, while Victor pitched. Could all of this have been avoided if Micky hadn’t been the coach they hired? Had Liz made a mistake that would haunt her for years to come? But then, she reminded herself about her words to Jennifer. The situation was not about Micky and Alana. It was about Alana’s continued fighting with her ex. It didn’t help ease her concern. Deep in her gut, she knew it was all mixed up together. Alana was angry enough to punch her ex-girlfriend in the face. But Liz knew that her anger wasn’t derived exclusively from Cindy. It also came from the failed connection between her and Micky. Jennifer was right about that. Alana was pissed, and Cindy came at her at the worst possible time.
What could I have done differently? Nothing. Not with the knowledge she had at the time. And now Alana was gone, quite possibly looking for work with another team they would have to face later in the season. She also had a catcher that held her responsible and an assistant coach that was a basket case. The temptation to give up was nearly overwhelming.
After practice she joined Micky and Victor at home plate to run through the normal routine of comparing notes.
“What have you heard from Dudek?” Victor asked at the end.
“I haven’t.” Liz avoided glancing in Mickey’s direction.
“I don’t blame her for that. I’m not so sure I’d hang around if I got fired either.” He looked at Liz. “Which brings me to the rumor that Greg Hack is selling the team. You know anything about that?”
She shook her head. “Boone hasn’t said a word about it.”
“Maybe it’s just a rumor.” Micky joined the conversation.
“Maybe.” Liz scuffed her foot in the dirt. “Knowing Boone, he’s waiting until the last minute so he can spring it on us. Make it a big surprise or something.”
“Dumbass,” Victor said succinctly.
“What is that going to mean for us if he does sell it?” Micky wanted to know.
“Maybe nothing.” Victor shrugged. “Maybe everything.” At Mickey’s panicked look he continued. “It all depends on the new owner. He can bring in his own staff if he wants.”
“They’ll have to pay out our contracts. Don’t worry about that part,” Liz assured her.
“Man!” Micky’s shoulders slumped. “My first professional coaching job and I’ll lose it before the season’s end. That will not look good on my resume.”
“Don’t worry about it,” Victor told her. “It’s happened to other coaches. Nobody will hold it against you.”
“Besides,” Liz spoke up, “it might not even be true.”
“From your mouth to God’s ear,” Mickey murmured.
“There’s nothing we can do about it.” Victor was practical. “Let’s concentrate on putting the best team we can on the field against Memphis. The rest will take care of itself.”
Micky followed Liz to her office and sank into the chair in front of her desk.
