When he found her she was standing beside a sheltered inlet surrounded by ragged palm trees shooting bottles off a tree stump with a meaty Ruger .45 ACP. The long-fanged leaves of the trees whispered together as the breeze passed by. The Ruger growled like a pitbull on a leash. Another bottle exploded with a dull whoosh. The surface of the Pontchartrain was choppy in the darkness, a cauldron of molten lead boiling all the way out to the black horizon.

Tanner parked up a short way along the road and ambled slowly back towards the inlet, trying his best to to compose his thoughts.

‘What happened to the twenty-two Jericho gave you?’ he asked in a carefully neutral voice, maintain- ing a respectful distance behind the shooter. Navarro didn’t look back. Narrowed her eyes and squeezed off another round. A cloudy brown bottle vanished into a cloud of sparkling shards. Bull’s-eye. Silver Glaser Safety Slugs. Showstopper rounds. Navarro wasn’t fucking around. He’d been worried about her safety in the company of killers like Jericho and Bowman, now he wasn’t so sure. Perhaps he should have been con- cerned for them?

‘That little BB gun won’t get the job done,’ she murmured in a preoccupied tone.

‘What job?’ Tanner asked, enunciating with great care and precision. He wanted to impress upon her how serious this was and get her to consider how reckless her behaviour had become. Julia didn’t reply.

‘Where'd you get it?’ he asked.

‘Friends in low places.’ She smiled coldly to herself, turning so she shared only her profile with him. She was outlined with moonlight.

‘Why did you go with Jericho?’ Tanner demanded.

'You're a big boy, you figure it out.’

Tanner grabbed her elbow and spun her around like a doll. ‘This isn’t a game of Catch Me Quick, you know. Trying to manipulate the likes of Bowman and Jericho is like dousing yourself in petrol and running through an exploding firework factory.’

‘You have your way of getting close to the Indian, I’ve got mine,’ she told him fiercely.

Tanner stared at her, not knowing how to deal with this. This was definitely not the Julia Jaybird he once knew and it was all his own fault for stupidly assum- ing he could manage her vengeful obsession. How had he been deluded into thinking this wouldn’t compli- cate the mission further? By agreeing to help Navarro he’d basically thrown napalm on the situation. But meeting her again and being reminded of his past had brought into sharp focus all of the things he was forced to do in this sewer of a job, all the compromises he had to make. Of course, he knew why undercover work was necessary and he’d gone into the profession with his eyes open, but you stand under a drain long enough you’re bound to start smelling eventually, and this particular stink didn’t rub off so easily. He’d hoped that if he helped Julia achieve some measure of justice then it would absolve him of his own dark taint.
