Chapter 14

Belgium

The crowd at Spa was raucous. Now the race was over, the sky filled with brightly coloured smoke from flares let off by spectators. Ondrej loved it here, the atmosphere was always wild. The Belgium fans knew how to party, and Spa would be rocking tonight when the party moved from the track—Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, colloquially known as Spa—to the small town of the same name nearby. He finished his in-lap after finishing in P6, listening to Jaxxon congratulate him over the radio. When he was racing, he never noticed the crowd, all his focus was on his job; the track, his car, and the other nineteen drivers. Now he’d finished and was cruising back to the pits, the wildness surrounded him. His helmet and ear buds reduced the engine noise by about forty percent; enough so he could hear the team radio while still being able to listen to the engine. At speed, the wind was the loudest noise. Doing his in-lap at a low cruising speed meant he could hear people cheering. The grandstands heaved with movement as the crowds jumped in unison, and so many flags were being waved that they blurred into a giant mass of colour and fabric. He was back! The mid-season break had been good for him. Good for the team too with Paulo finishing behind him in seventh; like a proper midfield team.

“Victor. You’ve built a fucking great car.” There was only so much he could say on the radio. During the race, the only channel he heard was the one between his race engineer Jaxxon and himself, but technically, all the radios were open channels, and every team had people who listened to all the different team chatter in the hope of picking up something useful for their own race strategies. The broadcaster beeped out any swearing, although they kept it in for that streaming show that aired all the behind the scenes politics and made S1 seem even more dramatic than it was.

He drove into the pits, onto the weighbridge, and went through his usual end of race routine. Last time he’d done this—a month ago—he’d imagined glimpses of red hair in the crowd. Hudson. This time, he didn’t need to look to know that Hudson was in the pitlane with Papa and the rest of the Gamble team. No one had blinked when they’d turned up together today. No one would, unless Ondrej kissed him in full view, as S1 was dominated by men and Hudson was just another bloke among many in the Gamble team. While they were keeping things quiet as much as they could, it was so relaxing to know Hudson could be part of today. He knew his team would react positively if he mentioned Hudson was his boyfriend. Boyfriend? Yes. After the last month living together, that’s definitely how he saw Hudson.

Socrates clapped him on the back. “Great drive. It’ll really inject motivation into the team for the second half of the season.”

“Thanks.” But Socrates had already walked off to talk to Paulo.
