Chapter Twenty-Two
SAVANNAH
The banging on my hotel door woke me the next morning. I groaned and rubbed the sandpaper out of my eyes. Then the memory of being with Dante came rushing back. How could I have been so stupid? My earlier speech about my virginity being mine to give? That was true. Maybe he hadnât been the best candidate after all, and regret had kept me awake well into the night.
All I wanted to do was put the down pillow over my head and hide, at least until check-out. Then Iâd grab a cab to the station where I planned to take an overnight Eurostar train to Rome. I didnât want to see anyone I knew over the next week. And definitely didnât want to answer the damned door.
âCome back later for housekeeping.â
âSavannah, open up,â came the American voice.
Damn. Bronson. I clambered out of bed and checked my face in the mirror hanging on the wall. My eyes were red and puffy and my lips were too. All because of that stupid Italian.
Wearing a pink T-shirt with a cartoon kitten on the front and matching pink gym shorts, I flung open the door.
âMorning, sunshine.â Bronson extended a cup of coffee in my direction. Behind him were a glowering Dante and an impassive Tanya.
Accepting the coffee, I glared at Dante and sighed, stepping aside to let everyone in.
As he passed me, Dante leaned to kiss me hello on both cheeks and I stiffened. There was no need to put on a show for Bronson and Tanya. I shot him a cross look and realized there were dark circles under his eyes. He must not have slept well, either.
Why did he have to smell spicy and yummy, like he had in the club?
Bronson and Tanya settled on the hotel roomâs small gold loveseat. Dante sat on the edge of the unmade bed inspected his nails. He was wearing faded jeans and a black t-shirt and he looked so solid, so masculine. I remained standing, sipping the coffee.
âThanks for the wake-up call.â
âIt is eight oâclock, but I guess you would need to sleep in after the late nights youâve been sharing,â Tanya said breezily. I grimaced.
âAnyway,â Tanya continued. âWeâre here to update you on the publicity efforts. We had a little glitch last night when you stormed out of the club. But only one photographer caught that, so I think weâre safe. We can always float a rumor that the two of you had a spat. Hereâs the great news: fans are wild about the Dante-Savannah love match.â
This made me snort. âIâm glad someone is.â
I noticed how Dante pressed his lips together and scrutinized the carpet.
âIs that all?â Dante asked. Of course, he couldnât wait to leave. He couldnât stand being in the same room as me. A fresh wave of shame bubbled up.
âWellâ¦â Bronson said. âNo. Weâre hearing there could be a leak of a memo from two other teams that might implicate Jack in the scandal. Weâre not sure, though.â
âSo we have a new plan,â Tanya said brightly.
