TWENTY-FOUR

The cat seemed pleased to see them. He jumped down from what was now seemingly his chair to greet them, winding around Mary’s feet, purring loudly.

‘You have to get out of the way,’ she told him. ‘You’re going to trip me.’

The cat, still purring, unwound himself and headed toward the office, pausing to look over his shoulder and emitting a loud meow. Not quite sure what he wanted, she followed. His water dish was half full, and his dinner dish was empty. He sat in from of them and meowed again, louder.

‘You must have had Victoria well trained.’ She filled both dishes.

Millie sat in the doorway, watching. Mary didn’t think she looked happy.

‘I really don’t like him best.’ She bent down, picked up the little dog, and held her close for a moment. ‘It’s just that he makes more noise than you do. Come on. I’ll give you a little lunch.’

She set Millie down, put a handful of kibble in her dish, checked her water, then turned to the refrigerator to see what she might make for herself. Nothing looked tempting. She reluctantly settled for a bowl of leftover pasta, which she put in the microwave, and heated up some coffee.

‘What did we do before we had microwaves?’ she asked Millie, who had finished her kibble and crawled under the kitchen table. Mary forked up a mouthful of the pasta, but it didn’t make it to her mouth. She put it down and reached for the papers that had Victoria’s records on it. She stared again at the initials. There it was. MG. Above it was the first clown notation TT, then further down, KN. The last one was PC. She put a check by MG. They knew who it was. But they didn’t know where Mike was late Halloween afternoon. She put a line through TT. Even if Troy bought the costume, he had an ironclad alibi for the time in question. Who were the other two? There was only one way she could think to find out. She pushed the pasta aside and reached for the phone. It rang before she could pick up the receiver. The screen showed Joy’s number.

‘Joy? Mary. I need to ask you a question.’

‘About what?’ Joy was nothing if not direct.

‘About Halloween in the park. Dan needs to know.’

‘How is that poor man? The thought that someone could do such a thing …’

Mary hurriedly got the conversation back on track. ‘He’s better. He’ll be on his way home soon, but it may be a while before he’s back on the job.’

‘Have you met that rude man who’s taking Dan’s place?’

‘Yes, I have met Sean Ryan and no, he certainly isn’t Dan. But this isn’t about him, Joy. It’s about costumes.’

‘Do you mean the clown costume? What about it?’

‘Yes. I need to know if you remember seeing anyone dressed like a clown in the park that day.’

‘As a matter of fact, yeah.’

‘You do? Who was it?’

‘Mike Gallagher.’

Mary felt her heart sink. ‘Did he have Robbie with him? Was Nancy there?’

‘She was.
