CHAPTER 27

This date is not a date

Saturday, 16th July 2135, evening

“Wait here till I come back,” Roth said, checking his appearance in the ornate gilt mirror.

“Okay.” Angel sat on the edge of one of the beds.

“Don’t wander around. What will you do with yourself while I’m gone?”

Her blue eyes met his. “If you’re time travelling, you could return a few seconds from now. Then you need not be concerned that I might run away. Why would you not do this?”

Roth sighed. The android had changed since he last met her, though it had only been a couple of weeks or so. Somehow, Angel had got a lot more human and a lot less pleasure droid in a very short time. She seemed more clued up, less accepting. Her beautiful eyes were now penetrating. With all this, she remained entirely literal-minded, with no sense of humour whatsoever. This might be – definitely was, on reflection – an advantage in a pleasure droid; it was a considerable drawback in a human being. He had not been remotely tempted to take her to bed. This new Angel would be asking odd questions at inconvenient moments, drawing her own conclusions, judging him more objectively than any human female.

Angel, lovely though she still was, had become disconcerting.

He answered her honestly. “If I did that on a regular basis, I’d age faster than everyone around me. Where’s the fun in that?”

She nodded, understanding. “Then I will listen to music.”

Curiosity briefly distracted him. “What music do you like?”

“Johann Sebastian Bach.”

“Just Bach?”

“He is the composer I like the best.”

“No rock?” Roth shook his head. “You don’t know what you’re missing.” He unclipped a playbud containing his all-time favourite tracks from his phone, and handed it to her. “Live a little.”
