Chapter Twenty-Six

Tyler sat in front of the dwindling fire and watched the flames turn to ash. He’d pushed too hard. He’d known it even as the words had tumbled out of his mouth. Amaliya was afraid. She also didn’t trust him.

That lack of trust was what needled at him the most. Gordon had given him insight into how to re-create the trust between them, but Tyler had been too impatient to let those bonds solidify before he’d tested them.

He crossed to the fireplace and removed the screen. Using the poker, he scattered the ashes and closed the flue. He couldn’t leave things unsettled between him and Amaliya. Maybe she could sleep when she was upset, but he knew he couldn’t.

Even though he rarely went upstairs, he started toward the staircase. To his surprise, Amaliya was walking down when he reached the entryway.

“Hey.” Tyler waited at the bottom. “I was just coming to find you.”

“I’m sorry about earlier. I’m still struggling with the idea of getting back on the ice before my stitches are out.”

“That’s okay. Maybe we can do something else tonight,” Tyler suggested. “Do you want to watch a movie?”

“Actually, I was going to look in the library. Mama said she has some old records in there too.”

Afraid talking about skating would create a bigger distance between them, Tyler said, “I thought you were tired of listening to music.”

“We can at least see what she has.” Amaliya walked down the hall to the library. Tyler had been inside that room only a handful of times since moving in. It was windowless, situated across from the dance studio, and boasted an abundance of books in multiple languages.

“Mama said they were in the cabinets.” She crossed to the wall lined with bookshelves that had cabinet doors on the lower half. She opened the doors of the one on the end. “Wow. I didn’t know my parents had this many records.”

Tyler looked over her shoulder. The bottom two shelves were full. He squatted and opened the cabinet beside her. “There are some cassette tapes in this one.”

“Anything interesting?” Amaliya asked.

“Looks like mostly Beach Boys and modern stuff. We probably need to stick with the classics.” He flipped through a few more tapes. As he moved two aside, he discovered a small, framed photo tucked behind the cassettes. Tyler pulled it out and glanced at the family of four. The little girl in the picture looked like a younger version of Amaliya, but he didn’t recognize the parents or the little boy. “Who’s this?”

Amaliya glanced at it. “I’ve never seen that before.” She leaned closer. “That looks like me.”

“I thought so too, but those aren’t your parents.” Tyler dusted off the glass with his sleeve. “Could it be an aunt and uncle or maybe cousins?”

“I don’t have any family except my parents.”

Robert’s voice sounded from the doorway. “Hey, you two. What are you doing in here?”

“Looking through music,” Amaliya said. “How was your game?”

“Lost four to three.”

“Sorry.”

“It happens.”

Amaliya took the photo and held it up.
