Chapter 14

They make me wait an eternity, but when the door finally opens it's not Kilmarten and his creepy side-kick but rather one of the original cops that arrested me, Lowell. He looks abashed as he steps inside, not meeting my eyes. Hovers uncertainly by the door, and then sets a Ziploc bag on the table. It's full of my things.

Which can mean only one thing: they're letting me go.

I sag with relief.

Lowell moves behind me and unlocks my handcuffs. "So... there's been a mistake."

I rub my wrists, hands needling as circulation rushes back into them. He still won't meet my eyes. "A mistake?"

"Yeah. We, uh." He puts his keys away, walks back to the door. "Turns out that wasn't heroine in the bag you were carrying. So, uh. Charges are being dropped. You're free to go."

I stand up. Free to go. No three words have ever been sweeter. Part of me wants to stand here and antagonize this man, attack him for what he's done to me, but a larger part just wants to get the hell out of Dodge. I snatch up the Ziploc, not bothering to open it, and sweep past him and out the door. I have to control myself not to sprint. I can hear Lowell following behind, but I don't need a guide - instinct tells me which way to go, toward the noise, down the hall and then out into a larger space, toward the front of the building and out into the entrance room beyond the booking desk.

It's a medium sized room, but I see only one thing - Julian rising to his feet as he catches sight of me, eyes wide, concern writ large over his face. Julian. At the sight of him I do break into a run, covering the last dozen yards in a flash and then I'm in his arms, and he's holding me tight, my cheek pressed against his chest, his arms around me. A sensation of warmth and safety fills me, and I feel deep down to my core that I'm going to be alright. Let that creepy dead-eyed bastard show up now. Julian's here.

He holds me tight, cheek pressed against my hair, and for a long and delicious moment I simply close my eyes and breathe in his smell, feel the fabric of his felt coat against my cheek, revel in the sensation of his strong arms around me. He's here. He was waiting for me. I hadn't let myself hope, but deep down part of me had known he would be.

Somebody is talking to Lowell in an arch tone of voice. Telling him off, it sounds like. I pull back at last from Julian and look up at his handsome face. He searches my own with concern, and carefully curls back a few tendrils of my hair that have caught in my lashes.

"Are you okay?" His voice soft, meant for me alone. True concern in his eyes.

I nod. I knot rises in my throat.
