Chapter 21

Rachel shows up fifteen minutes later. Have I said how much I love my best friend? She was in the middle of dinner with Tom, her latest love interest, and here they both roll up with no questions ask. I’m holding my coat over my head and when the car stops by the sidewalk I open the door and jump inside.

Both of them turn around to stare at me. I gingerly lay the jacket down on the seat and try to not wilt beneath Rachel’s stern glare. Tom glances from her to me, and wisely decides to stay quiet.

“So. Julian?”

“Yeah.” I try to find a positive way to formulate my words. “He’s down at the police station.”

“Arrested?”

“No. Giving a deposition.”

“And what exactly is he deposing about?”

I sigh and pull my skirt down my thighs. To think I spent an hour and a half getting ready for this night. “That detective came by with a search warrant. He’s trying to bust Julian for running his Dreaming business.”

Rachel snorts and turns back around. “That all?”

“I…” I want to defend him. I want to but I just don’t know. “I think so. Apparently there are people in power who are scared of what Dreaming can do. They want to shut him down.”

Rachel begins driving, and Julian’s loft slides out of view.

“This the guy that paid off your brother’s debt?” Tom sounds almost apologetic for speaking up. You don’t mess with Rachel’s temper.

“Yeah. Same guy.” I look out the window. “No questions asked. That’s why I can’t just write him off. He’s not what you think, Rachel.”

Rachel just snorts again. I sigh. It’s going to take a lot of work to turn her around. Instead, I sit back and look out the window. So much has happened that I’m content to simply mull things over. Yuliya. Who is she to Julian? He seemed to trust her implicitly. Detective Kilmarten. He spoke to them as if they were old friends. He didn’t seem a fool. Julian. Capable of showing me such beauty it took my breath away one moment, and then growing so cold and distant the next that he seemed a stranger. Dreaming. That’s what it all came down to. Julian’s belief that I could do something amazing. That I could be a unique Pilot of incredible power. What were these powerful people afraid of? Sexual liberation? It couldn’t be just that.

I don’t know. Do I trust him? Do I trust Julian? He saved me from Jace. He had saved Tommy. He hadn’t demanded anything in return but my trust. Did he deserve it? When I had followed him over the edge of the cliff, I had trusted him with my life. Moments later he had thrust me into my family’s car, shocking me to my core. Still, he’d explained why he had done so: to teach me right away that you can’t play god in the Dream. You can’t claim to know what’s better for other people. I wasn’t sure I was convinced though.
