Chapter 29

SCOTT WOKE TO AN EMPTY house again. He missed his wife and how things used to be. He still wasn’t over that she left him. He wondered where she was right now and if her Chevelle would get her to Valdosta safely.

Then, there was Amy. Where was she right now? Would she find Lori, could she catch up to her? He needed to talk to Don, to make him understand. He thought now, after careful consideration, that he should also head for Valdosta.

The drive to work gave him time to rehearse what he wanted to say to Don. They had known each other for years, but he had just taken him back, this wasn’t going to be easy. But, he had learned in the service that you can do anything that you really need to do.

“Don, good morning, how are you today?” He tried to sound casual and not too desperate. Mentally, he had already checked out, he wanted to get on the road. This was his battle to fight, not Amy’s.

“Oh, pretty good Scott. You’re in here early this morning, what’s on your mind?” Don liked to get straight to the point, especially in the morning when he liked to get his work done. After that, he was well known to drift off to the golf course in the afternoon. Why not? There had to be some advantages to being an owner.

Scott started with Lori leaving, her parents showing up and then gave up Amy leaving town to try and find Lori. He finished with asking for an advance on his two-weeks of vacation time. As he was wrapping up his plea for time off, there was a bulletin on the radio from the police out of Dalton, Georgia.

“There has been a homicide that may be the work of the same killer that killed a man in Lenoir City, Tennessee. Police are looking for a female with long blond hair, driving a red Camaro convertible with Kentucky plates. The information included that she is quite tall, perhaps 6’. She appears to be Southbound. Anyone with information please call Dalton, Georgia police department or the state police.”

They both looked at each other for a second, but neither man would say it. They were thinking it-but they wouldn’t say it.

“Scott, if you need a few weeks to look for Lori, by all means, go ahead. We’ll struggle a little, but I know your team will step up for us while you’re gone. I don’t like Amy being out there by herself. Let me know if you find her or Lori and take care. I’ll see you in two weeks and don't worry. I’ll call payroll right now and have them cut you a check. It would be an advance against your draw.”

“Thanks so much. I was hesitant to even ask after the big break you gave me, and after all, you have done for me over the years. This means a lot to me. It really does.”

“Scott, you’re a good man, a fellow Vet and a great salesman.
