The next several hours were spent communicating with the patrols through his radio and scrolling through his laptop and tablet. A cold beer went warm, the tab still on the bottle, as forgotten as the chicken patties on the plate next to it.
Glenn was single-minded in this self-appointed investigation. For hours, he searched companies that handled toxic waste of any kind. He found one that was dumping mercury in the rivers of Maine. For a moment, he thought he had his culpritâuntil he learned the plant had been shut down for several years. Most of the others had regular inspections confirming their respectable track records. The Ts were crossed and the Is dotted. Their hazmat disposals were recorded and properly monitored, paid for by the companies themselves.
Lack of results triggered a headache. However, his gut feeling did not let up. The trouble was the number of plants in Maine and the surrounding states. Too many to individually read up on in a short period of time.
He settled on a steel manufacturing plant in Westbrook. They had one CSB investigation in 2017 for a serious injury in a nearby neighborhood. Further research brought to light a hydrogen sulfide leak, which caused respiratory issues in two residents.
âNothing to do with illegal hazmat disposal.â
Glenn looked at his meal. Warm beer and cold chicken, not exactly what his stomach desired. He stood up and took the plate to the kitchen, yawning once he arrived. When he opened his eyes, he noticed it was dark out.
How long was I at it? He looked at the clock. Ten oâclock. Damn. At least four hours.
He yawned again, then opened the microwave. After hearing the clang of the rotating plate, he realized in his drowsiness that heâd placed the beer bottle in there instead of the chicken.
âOh, shit!â He retracted the object. âDamn. After today, nuking my beer wouldâve been the icing on the cake.â He chuckled, then put the beer in the fridge. âThere we go. Seems Iâm always looking in the wrong place lately.â
The wrong place . . .
âA Canadian ship . . .â He rushed back to the computer and began looking up companies with chemical plants in both the U.S. Northeast Coast and Canada. An hour-long internet search followed until one caught his eye.
âOrion Plastic Company,â he read aloud. He immediately did an internet search for any recorded offenses in the companyâs history. His efforts were futile. Every document he found suggested that none of the plants owned by the company had been subject to investigation.
He looked at the locations again, then shook his head. One was in Nova Scotia, the other near Dexter.
It canât be a coincidence.
Glenn was once again at a standstill. That gut feeling was roaring now, but he had nothing to go on except locations.
Frustration took its toll. He stepped outside for some fresh air. The night was refreshing, minus its reminder that he had to be up and at the office in seven hours. With that in mind, he considered the possibility that his father was right.
