With the 4B pencil, push the darks, and then shade over the left-hand side of the log once more with an HB pencil.

Go over the edges of the ripples in the water with a dull HB pencil and use a blending stump to blur it together.

RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD

In this drawing, I want to show the iconic image of a hummingbird approaching a flower for a sip of nectar. There’s no flower in my reference photo, but I decide to use a columbine bloom.

Start with a sketch, and then erase the guidelines you used to establish the basic shapes.

Block in areas of shadow with a B pencil.
