PERSONAL TREATMENT

Having arrived at that part of the picture, I may explain that I thereafter ceased to copy Nature. I had got down what I first saw of the landscape, but in the farther process I was concerned, while preserving the general character of the scene, to infuse it with a sense of my personal appreciation of its pictorial qualities. It was to be a view on Hampstead Heath, but it would fail as a picture unless it was recognizable as a personal view of the scene depicted. Therefore it was necessary to introduce my own effects. I could make the shadow formed by the overhanging trees occupy whatever space I felt was required in the foreground of my picture, despite the fact that by the time this stage was reached the shadow had disappeared. I could deepen or extend the shadows thrown by the trees in the middle distance as the composition demanded. I could add to the height of one tree in order to balance another, and I was free to roam over my picture, adjusting, subduing, accentuating the various objects wherever it appeared to be desired.

It must be kept in mind that the intention was to make not a photographic or topographical record of the scene, but, at the same time, to render it generally recognizable and in terms of traditional naturalism; and therefore it behoved me to proceed discreetly if I was to avoid undue exaggeration in both interpretation and technique. In fact, to impress one’s individualism on a picture it is necessary to exercise all the judgment of which one is capable.
