Sam stomps her foot and crosses her arms over her chest as she glares at the massive card catalog. “I cannot stand how slow this thing is.” We’ve already pulled out several long drawers with their little sleeves of library cards with their brief descriptions of books and the corresponding Dewey decimal number under which they’re filed in the seemingly endless shelves of the enormous library. White cards for the many books we’ve browsed through and discarded litter one of the gleaming wooden tables like feathers from broken wings.

I look up from a book titled Women to Reckon With as I put it on the to-be-reshelved cart with the rest of our rejects. “And by this thing you’re talking about an inanimate card catalog?”

“Yes. Why aren’t you a computer?” Sam scolds it.

I cover my laugh by clearing my throat, though Sam shoots me a look that says she is not amused by my amusement. “Okay,” I say. “We’ve been here for hours. You’re not going to any lectures tomorrow and none of the ones I want to attend are early, so let’s take a break and go to Aquarius Hall. Grab some snacks and then make notes about which categories are big zeros so we can regroup and come back tomorrow.”

Sam blows out a long breath. “I’m all for the break and the snack, especially if we go to my hall where there’s a big charcuterie board wrapped up in the fridge begging to be eaten, but I have to tell you, Wreny, I honestly don’t know where else to look.”

I glance around us at the immense library. It’s like something the Beast would’ve built for Belle, complete with rolling ladders, beautiful reading tables with bright, individual lights, and comfy window seats built under each of the leaded-glass windows. “Sam, you cannot seriously tell me that we’re done looking through all of these books.”

“Of course not, but not all of these books make any sense for us to check out. It’s just that we’ve struck out in the categories where we should find something about being a chosen maiden. Sure, there are more books we can look through, but I’m not feeling very hopeful.”

Sam looks so dejected that I wrap my arm around her shoulders as we wind our way back through the stacks toward the entrance. “Hey, you’re just bummed that it’s taking us a lot longer than it should to find anything. You’ll feel better after some charcuterie.”

Sam sighs. “Charcuterie does make everything better.”

I nod. “Exactly. Just like tea and biscuits.”

Sam snorts. “No, absolutely not like tea and biscuits.”

We round the end of one stack and the main librarian’s counter comes into sight. It’s a beautiful piece of polished wood that curves into a big crescent shape behind which is an ornately carved desk. Behind the desk are lots of holding shelves for books that are on the academy’s recommended reading lists. I was just wondering where the librarian had gone and feeling slightly guilty about leaving so
