CHAPTER FIFTEEN

SAYLOR

Brayden was watching for me. He flung open the apartment door when I was still twenty feet away. He stood in the doorway scratching his neck with a smile which said he knew damn well what I’d been doing.

I paused, shrugging. He laughed before wrapping me in a brief hug. I thought about what a blessing it was to have even one person in the world who knew something of your mind without any words passing between you.

My best friend poured me a cup of coffee, sat down at the kitchen table and waited.

“Where’s Millie?”

“She had to go to work. Not everyone can wile away the hours waiting for the prodigal cousin to show up.” Brayden removed his glasses and wiped the lenses on his polo shirt.

“So that’s what you were doing. I suppose you want to hear all the rough and dirty details?”

He wagged a finger. “Don’t be gross, Say. We’re still blood.”

“Tough shit. I’m going to torture you anyway. It was phenomenal, Bray. Awesome. Jesus, I didn’t know there were so many places a guy could put that thing.”

Bray made a show of falling out of his chair and pretending to have acute appendicitis.

“Quit it.” I tapped him lightly with my foot.

He grinned at me from the floor. “I knew you were into him.”

“Right¸ as always,” I grumbled.

Bray rolled over and got to his feet, settling back in the chair. “Tell me one thing, Saylor. Is he good to you?”

Quick as a flash of lightning my mind’s eye saw every moment I’d been with Cord these past weeks, from the tender to the sour and finally to the passionate.

“He’s good to me,” I said softly. “He is.”

Brayden nodded thoughtfully. “Well that’s the crux of the equation isn’t it?”

“You’re the master engineer. You tell me.”

“What I can tell you is that if the foundation’s not solid there’s no point in fixing anything above it.”

I caught his eye. “You and Millie have a solid foundation.”

He cocked his head curiously. “She told me you’d talked.”

“We did,” I nodded. “We talked. She’s fantastic, Brayden. You don’t need me to say so.”

“No,” he agreed. “I don’t need it. But it’s still nice to hear. And Say? You could do a hell of a lot worse than Cord. I know he’s still got a few rough edges he’s trying to iron out but I see him with you and he’s trying. Trying to be one of the good guys, you know?”

“I do,” I sighed, checking out the kitchen clock. “Look, thanks for waiting around for me. I’ve got to be at work in an hour so I should get in the shower.”

Brayden wrinkled his nose. “Yes,” he said with disdain, “please shower. I’m sure you really need to after last night.”

“Pig,” I shoved him.

“Hey,” he called after me before I closed the door to the bathroom, “you were the one bragging about your man’s creative penile functions.”

I laughed as I stepped under the shower. I felt like I’d just run ten miles after spending a month in bed.
