Chapter nineteen

Cai comes out of the bedroom fully dressed in jeans and a sweatshirt. He sits at the table, and the three of us stare at the bottle of Worcestershire sauce.

It seems to glare malevolently back at us. It’s a belligerent, nasty looking thing. Completely at odds with the warm, cosy kitchen. Even the soft morning sunlight seems to shy away from it.

“How dangerous is it?” asks Cai.

I shrug. The vision didn’t tell me that much, and I’m pretty sure my thoughts about it being malevolent are just my imagination being dramatic. I don’t know how dangerous the poison is. It might be safe to touch, or breathe. Or it might not be. The only thing I know for sure, is that it is deadly if ingested.

“Alright,” says Cai in answer to my silent shrug. “We will wrap it in a towel and bury it far from the cottage, just to be sure.”

I’d prefer to yeet it into the sun, but that would require going near Zh with it, and fuck that. I’m not risking my dragon’s health. Cai’s idea is better. As always.

“I’m fine, I promise,” says Kirby, sounding exasperated.

I raise an eyebrow at him, and he flushes. “Sorry.”

He is forgetting to talk telepathically again? It really is adorable. I don’t want Kirby to ever change. He is a bright light shining in the darkness of the world. Everybody should get to have a Kirby in their life.

“After we have made our plans, you should go down to the mine so Ri can see with his own eyes and scent with his own nose,” says Cai.

Another good idea. There is a reason Cai is a great leader.

Kirby nods in agreement. He settles back in his chair and I can tell by the way tension seems to leave the set of his shoulders, that his dragon is satisfied with this plan.

Get rid of the evil sauce, calm Ri down. It’s a great start, but there are still gaping omissions.

“So, we bury the poison, and then what?” I say, even though I really don’t want to.

A large part of me wishes burying the poison would be the end of it. But it’s not an option. The people who want the chosen one dead, will keep on trying. I can’t rely on visions saving the day every time. And once people find out that it is Cai who is the chosen one, and they will discover that, because it is not a secret that can be kept, the attempts will merely switch to him. And call me selfish, but I don’t want either of my lovers to be murdered.

Besides all the murderous intent, there is also the glaringly profound fact that Cai is the frigging chosen one. He will not sit around in a cottage and ignore that.

No matter how good I make the sex. Though it will be damn fun to try.

It’s a struggle to keep my grin at bay. I don’t want my lovers to think I’ve lost my mind.
