FOURTEEN: To the Gates of Rath Mormar

Her eyes flickered open in the darkness. Pain. Unceasing, aching pain. She tried to lift her head, but sharp darts of searing agony shot across her forehead.

“Move carefully, Chosen,” Fiona said.

“Where are we?” Rhyan whispered.

“Safely across the West Briden and camped on the Dalrian lowlands.” Fiona touched the water bag to Rhyan’s lips. “Drink.”

The cool liquid soothed her parched throat.

“What happened?”

“We are not sure, exactly. The Dark Knight’s arrow covered you with some foul fog. You shouted and fell from Starlight’s back into the river. You’ve been unconscious for hours. There was also some bruising on your right hip and…” Fiona fell silent.

“What is it?” Rhyan asked.

“Your right arm was broken.”

Rhyan flexed the arm. Her muscles ached, as from a deep bruise, but the limb was whole.

“Could the Eyestone be healing me?”

Fiona shifted in the darkness. “I have never heard that the Eyestone has that power. Keven agrees. He says there is something else hidden within you—something he doesn’t recognize. Something that is…coming to life.”

You are one of us, dragon-child.

“What of Starlight? He was…bitten. I struck the wolf with Man Lyr’s knife.”

“He is not in danger. The wound is long, but not deep. We have much skill in treating the injuries of the Windhooves. I myself packed the dressing with honey and some fresh leigheas I found growing nearby.”

“Thank the Crown.” Rhyan sighed—and groaned as the pain is her head flared again.

“Finish this, Chosen.” Fiona held a wooden cup to her lips. “It will ease your discomfort and allow you to sleep.”

“I shouldn’t. We must continue. Aren’t the wolves following us?”

“Bridelyn did not allow the Dark Knight and his wolves to ford the river into Dalria. They were forced to continue to Teorainn Bridge and will be many hours behind us.”

It must have been Bridelyn who spoke to me…warned me. But how can I give up this quest?

She gazed up at the midnight sky. Familiar stars stood out against the velvet darkness, comforting her. Bilden, the constellation of the Smith, hung directly overhead and the first six bright stars of the Arrow of Trall pointed over the hills to the south. In the east, toward Kember, Llinos and Catrin, the Sisters, still held hands, together for eternity.

Elspeth.

Fiona coaxed a tiny mouthful of the draught between Rhyan’s reluctant lips. “Everyone rests now. You and Starlight are not the only casualties. Collen William’s son was slashed in the leg and lost much blood.”

“Will he be all right?”

“Aye, the danger is past. Sleep will help. The First Son has ordered that we are to remain here until first light.”

“Ailem…” Rhyan whispered, remembering his arms around her as they plunged into the river. “Where is he?”

“He watches,” Fiona said. “We do not know if other enemies await us here.”

“Fiona, I have wanted to ask you…why was the Second Daughter so angry about my name sharing with Ailem? And why is it permitted for me to speak your name without a formal sharing?”

Fiona averted her eyes. “Many of the Faerie were shocked that the First Son gave you his name.
