CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Grey blinked and turned his head left and right as he took in the world he had stepped into.

“How am I back here?” he muttered.

The portal had taken him away from Mags, Mortimer, Crowl, and Earth, and back to the desolate dead world he and the others had been stranded on a few short months ago.

It looked exactly the same. For all he knew he was on another part of that realm, in another place on the dead world’s surface, but it all looked so depressingly similar to him. He looked down at his feet and the impression his shoes made in the yellow-white sand that covered the ground. It was not sand though. It was bone dust. It was the ground-up remnants of what life once must have existed and thrived here before Glory had his way with the realm.

Horizon to horizon was covered in brooding dark clouds, rendering the world a mute and depressing blackish-gray. Here and there the carcass of the old world jutted out from the dust dunes. The skeletons of old towers, buildings, and entire cities spread out before him and into the distance.

Grey grimaced, sucking in a breath and trying to convince himself that he wanted to be here. Where Kels went, he went. That was his mindset. But goodness did that redhead know how to test his resolve some days.

Still hearing the crackle of the portal at his back, Grey turned around. He glanced back through the breach, getting one last look at Mags before the green light dissipated and the portal shut, leaving him separated from his friend with one way forward.

“By all the powers in all the realms… What is this place.”

Grey puffed out his cheeks, turning to look at the other dragons who had volunteered to come with Kels to secure further power for the portal staff. They were all in human form, staring with wide eyes and hung jaws at the devastation ahead of them. Grey knew he shouldn’t, but he took some solace knowing that at least he was better prepared to endure the horrors of this world than they were.

“Is this… Is this world…”

“It’s a dead world,” Kels said, holding herself together and showing no discernible emotion as she took the first decisive steps forward. “Grey, Mother, Corus, all of us have been here before. It is a world with no life. No people, no dragons, even the insects and the bacteria are all gone. This is what a truly dead world looks like when it has lost the very last of its magic. This is what we are fighting to prevent. This is the fate of every realm in existence if Glory is allowed to defeat us.”

“How… how can this world even exist?” asked one of the dragons, currently in the form of a tall bodybuilder.

Grey scanned the horizon and pointed to a place where the monotone gray of the skies was broken. A thin line of sickly yellow-green light surged into the sky, breaking the cloud cover.
