FINDERS KEEPERS

When all was said and done, Lisbeth spent another three days recovering further. She still wasn’t completely up to snuff, but she was good enough where she could climb and potentially run for her life if the need arose.

It wasn’t like she laid about the entire time, of course. She made sure Polina took her medicine regularly and that all of the kids took the deworming medication Mads had given her. She also went out and bought new supplies to replace the ones that had been lifted off her by Victor and his gang.

There were other things too—cleaning out the chicken coup, doing Polina and Katyana’s hair, as well as teaching the others what little reading skills she had. They were a little bit behind her but catching up rapidly.

It was a nice few days of peace, but Lisbeth couldn’t allow herself to become complacent. Sure, they had full bellies and medicine, and a safe place to stay for the moment, but that could always change in an instant. She’d certainly learned that the hard way. So yeah, maybe she could wait another couple of days before heading into danger, but why risk it?

That was how Lisbeth found herself climbing a rock wall, shimmying her way back to her secret exit up into the land that once was. Although she’d been out of action for the longest time, it was like sliding right back into habit.

Sure enough, she made it up to the half-crumbled path and clambered under the fallen pillar, making her way up to the busted hatch. She did pause multiple times, looking over her shoulder to make sure no one was following her. Maybe she was being paranoid, but she wanted to make sure that no one unwelcome got the drop on her.

Funny, usually whenever she was scrapping, her greatest fear was the creepy crawlies that lurked around the ruins and in the Void. Now, she was pretty sure she was more afraid of whatever was inside of Kyerchov.

A sad state of affairs, but it wasn’t like Kyerchov was going to change anytime soon. So in the meantime, Lisbeth would just need to figure out how to live in it.

Or survive visiting on top of it, that was.

Cracking the exit open the usual tiny gap, Lisbeth slithered through it and clambered over debris until she once more found herself on the path she’d taken before on her last jackpot haul. Hopefully, this one would end quite differently.

It felt a bit surreal climbing her way to the same downward tube she’d navigated before, pausing every so often to listen carefully. She didn’t know if it was just her paranoia talking, but she felt like she was hearing a lot more skittering than she was used to.

And if she was really hearing what she thought she was hearing, there was something strange to the sound. It wasn’t the normal pattern that signaled toothy critters were surrounding her to take a bite. No, it actually kind of… It kind of sounded like they were running away from something.
