Chapter 11

“You didn’t save me!” Gravel protested.

Flame was grinning with all of his teeth. The smug expression on his face made Gravel want to smack him with his tail.

“Sure, I did,” Flame said. “Remember … your father was going to kill you!”

“Why should I believe you!” Gravel roared. “All you’ve done for me is cause me pain!”

“Well that’s better than killing you!” Flame pointed out. “And who might this be?” He pointed at Frostbite.

“Umm … I’m no one …” Frostbite muttered.

“Wait a second. You’re Frostbite, aren’t you?” Flame slowly hissed.

Frostbite looked as if someone was clawing at his eyes. Flame definitely scared the Ice Dragon, though Gravel had no idea why.

What’s so important about Frostbite? he asked himself.

“Well, well. What brings you here?” Flame demanded.

“Um … nothing,” Frostbite said, clearly petrified.

“Well, it must be a special time. It’s not every day you meet the only dragon on this island with the magical Viper Charm,” Flame hissed.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Frostbite said.

Why is he so scared of Flame? I mean, Flame is mean, but that shouldn’t petrify a dragon. Do they know each other?

The grin on Flame’s face made Gravel nervous. Whenever Flame was happy about something, it was never good.

“GRAVEL! Stop standing there like a useless lizard and open this DOOR!” Flame demanded.

“Gravel, don’t do it. He hasn’t done you any good. What do you think he will do when he is free? Love you?” Ember said.

Even though she had a point, it still hurt to hear. He never did love me, Gravel realized, holding back tears.

“OPEN THIS DOOR!” Flame commanded again.

“I’m sorry. I can’t do that. Ember has a point. The second you’re free, you’ll just kill all three of us,” Gravel pointed out.

“If you don’t let me out right now, you will be sorry!” Flame went on. “One day when I’m king of the Fire Dragons, I will have the entire army come and kill YOU!” Flame threatened.

Gravel had always known that Flame wanted to become king of the Fire Dragons, but he never knew Flame would actually try to get the throne.

At that moment, Frostbite ran over to Flame’s prison cell.

“Frostbite, wait!” Gravel called.

The Ice Dragon was already in front of the metal bars and sprayed some ice breath on the keyhole. A coating of snow and ice covered the box.

Frostbite abruptly spun around and smashed the box with his tail. The keyhole was now broken into many different pieces of metal and frost.

Flame pushed the door open with ease. His face glowed red with delight and anger. Smoke was now rising from his nostrils. He slowly slithered closer and closer to Gravel, grinning with all of his teeth.

Gravel shuddered. He’s free!

Gravel took a step back, but Flame was still slowly walking toward him.

He is definitely going to kill me this time.

“Oh, poor, poor Gravel. Such an innocent dragon. At least that’s what you think!” Flame hissed.

“I am innocent! It’s YOU who belongs in the terrible prison!” Gravel snapped.

“What do you mean you’re innocent? You have run from the entire Fire Dragon guard.
