CHAPTER 17

“What in the Nexus are you two doing in the same cell?” a witch asked. She was the first we saw since Vivienne had left. She looked at the woman beside her, her brows wrinkled and her hands on her hips.

“Drusilla will want to know,” the second witch replied.

What looked like half the coven stood outside our cell. The many witches huddled around the bars, whispering among themselves. After a few moments, they exchanged glances, eventually looking to me for answers.

“Vivienne,” I said, simply because I didn’t want them to think that I’d freed myself.

Half of the witches groaned.

“Of course,” the first said, “we should have known better than to leave a man alone with her.”

“She’s likely already fucked King Harper,” another added with a chortle as she slipped a key into the lock and opened our cell door. I idly noted that while Vivienne and this witch used keys, Drusilla had opened the door with magic.

Lyre made a face of disgust.

“Drusilla’s been keeping a close eye on him, so I doubt it,” another said as she used magic to yank Lyre’s chains from the walls.

They were remarkably calm and relaxed considering they were freeing two prisoners. I wagered that I was physically strong enough to deal with the lot of them, and since they were in close range I had the advantage, but I didn’t know where King Harper was.

Plus, there was no telling how many witches sat between him and us. The moment I started shit, it’d turn into a life-or-death battle. I wasn’t willing to do that when I had no idea how deep in the castle we were, let alone how to get out.

No, I needed to bide my time some more.

Lyre took her cues from me without questioning my intent. As the witches started to lead us up the stairs, she simply glanced at me before shuffling along with her head held low, just as I did.

I didn’t think myself much of an actor, but maybe if I faked looking defeated, the witches would look down on me even more. While chatting among themselves, they herded us up a long flight of stairs that I assumed brought us to the main floor, then through several side doors and corridors. There were many choke points I could have used to my advantage in a fight. It pained me not to use them, but I simply made a mental note of them and continued.

Unlike the white, smooth stone of Brightvale’s castle, this one looked more like those I’d seen in pictures back on Earth. The stones were gray and rough, looking like they’d been chipped and chiseled from the side of a mountain. The walls were relatively empty, which I supposed might have been because they were still moving in since I’d sort of destroyed their last base.

All in all, there wasn’t much to look at, though the architecture was amazing—especially those stained glass windows. I had no idea whether the colorful glass depicted history or legends, but that didn’t make them any less impressive.
